I'm hoping for a woody

Postby ohiocamper » Tue Feb 14, 2012 12:49 pm

I've been lurking for awhile, and planning, and scheming...

Right now, I've got plans to build an on-road ~4x8. I've got a set of Big Woody plans, which I really like, but I'll probably alter the profile slightly for a more teary shape. I plan to paint it, too. I've got a scavenged frame to build on, and I'm trying to decide how to construct the walls. I like the simplicity and strength of plywood, but I'm slightly concerned about condensation on cool nights. Weight is not the issue, just the insulation factor. Maybe someone with experience can enlighten me on how much of an improvement foam offers.

I'm a sucker for building things. I've got too many projects the way it is, so who knows how this turns out!

About me: Mid-20's, married, no kids. Grew up camping, want to pass the fun down to my family (if we have kids).

As another midwesterner With 5 years of teardrop camping experience I can only speak for myself.

The summers are hot and muggy and the winters are cold. So I would not build without insulation all around. The floor is easiest , the way I do mine just lay the foam down inside on the floor and cover with a 2nd sub floor of 3/8 to 1/2 plywood of osb. Side walls are filled between the inner and outer plys or you might be interested in the way I did my little 4x7.
I simply made material wrapped foam panels that were jam fitted in place. They are removable and could be repaired , replaced or simply remove the material and drop it in the washer. The roof foam is dropped between the spars the only concideration is BE SURE you have what ever electrical you want in the roof planned to work with the foam. You might peek in my 4x7 build thread to see the push in sidewall insulation. We Hoosiers have a lot of good Buckeye camping buddies out of the Cincinatti area and others over the border so hope to meet ya at a gathering

P.S. Welcome to the insanity !

That's a great concept, BobH. I'll have to think about that. Maybe we'll meet up one of these times!
