Black Goo....Will it ever dry?

We're started to get a little concerned about the under coating on our trailer. I applied the asphalt roof patch (Black Jack® 6125 Roof & Foundation Coating) a week ago and it's still pretty gooey. I only applied one coat, but made sure to dab some extra in the cracks and crevises. Yes it's been a little cool (50-55°) in the garage, but I'm pretty sure that it should at least have a "skin" by now. I've even ran a heater in the garage a few nights, but not seeing any real change. I am seriously starting to doubt this stuff will ever dry. Before I toss the floor, I'd like to see if anyone has any ideas. Our original plan was to build the cab off the trailer, might have to rethink that. Thanks.

Give it some time - there are a number of factors that might inhibit the drying time

Most petroleum based things have application temps in the 70s and above so lower temps will definitely effect the drying time as the solvents inside have to evaporate for the substance to thicken and get to the dry tacky state that is final dried.

I am trying to be patient, but I was really hoping to get the walls mounted to the floor this weekend. We had hoped to build the cab first then install it on the frame. That way we can still get the cars in the garage at night. What can I say, we hate scraping ice and snow before going to work. Anyway the goo is still sticky enough that I'm afraid it'll glue itself to what ever I set it on right now. We built a little "A" frame dolly last night to put it on. That has freed up a lot of table space for other work. So we'll give it anther week or so and hope for the best.

If you can get the temp in garage up to 70s for about 3 hrs it will dry for the most part. Get a fan and force air over it as well would help with the higher temps.

I actually heated the garage to about 80°for about 2 hours the other night. Maybe that wasn't long enough so I'll give it another try this weekend.

How thick did you put it on? It only takes a thin layer not very much as it penetrates the wood.

I tried to keep it pretty thin. I did notice that I got the stuff with fibers in it. The thicker areas are where the fibers are and they are the real problem areas. I'd probably have better luck without the fibers.

This is one of the reasons I use plam (plastic laminate) on both sides of the floor.
On my first build I used the black goo, never again.
No more waiting for the black goo to set up and it rubbing off everything that touches it.
I'm ready to Rock and Roll as soon as I trim the plam with a router.
Covering both sides equally (moisture barrier) keeps the floor as flat as possible for the long term.
If you decide to replace the floor this might be a consideration.
Even though it will cost you more plam is superior to the "Black Goo". Danny

We've used good old Henry 107 Asphalt Emulsion on both of our trailers. It doesn't have the fibers in it and seems to dry in about three our four hours. When left over night, you can work with it the next day.

I used a similar product black goo with fibers. My tear is outside under the patio/carport. It dried in about 4 days and I did have to schmeer it on by hand (I used tight fitting kitchen gloves and they worked great) because the weather was rather cool. Then we had some rain. I think because yours is inside the garage and you appear to be in a cooler climate that may be a factor as to why it is not drying quicker. As unconventional as I am I would try to find a non stick surface to set it on. Probally would see if that renolds wrap no stick would work and use that. Yes I know that is a crazy idea but sometimes things like that work for a temporary solution.

Well it looks like we're going to be ok. It's dry to a hard tacky stage as of 3:30 PM today. At least it doesn't come off on my fingers when I touch it now. I've got the heater running and already have the temp up to 70. I'll keep it running for a few hours to get things get nice and toasty then batten down the hatches for the night. The garage will stay 50+ without the heater, so hoping for 60+ tonight.

Lesson learned - I think the high humidity was our downfall. Need to pay closer attention to the application notes

How do you treat the edges of the plywood?

Have you had any problems with rocks or road debris chipping or cracking the underside?
