I'm trying wooden fenders. Started fairing.

Postby Dean in Ct. » Thu Feb 16, 2012 7:48 am

I have decided that I would like to build some wooden fenders for my trailer. I acquired some 2'x4' birch panels and glued them up 3 thick. They appear to be metric because 3 thick = 2 1/8". I created a template withe the shape I want and cut 4 pieces. Then I adjusted the template to make it a little higher and a little longer and drew that out, as can be seen, uncut, in the pictures. These each will be sandwiched between 2 of the smaller ones giving a 6"+ width. Hope to cut them out in about an hour and then glue the 3 sub assemblies together. After that I will begin shrinking/ adjusting my pattern and gluing the additional pieces on and fairing as I go. We'll see....

Any thoughts? Who has already done this?

I made wooden fenders (not to use, but as a plug to make fiberglass) and just cut the side profile and then used thin plywood and blocks of pine where I need to round things out. I have some pics

I never used them, but they would have been fine with a few coats of something to protect them from rot.

Nice Job Kerry!
I have clearly overestimated how much bigger my middle laminate needed to be but I have an aggressive 4" sanding disk so I'll get to work knocking it down.

Maybe I'll try a ridge running down the center!
(How do I make the pictures not get cropped? I'm uploading from photobucket using the image code option)

Dean, your pics do NOT seem to be cropped. They look fine to me.

I see. It is a bit expensive to do just one pair though. I used to make and sell them, but had health problems and sold the molds to Lil Bear.

Good luck with your project though and if you think that I can help, just ask.

Began fairing the first one, the second is still being glued up. I guess I'll keep the center ridge until I decide getting it smooth and even is impossible! Well, I can always remove it later if needs be...
Funny, making one of anything is a snap. Making 2 the same is a trick! Luckily it will be hard to see them both at the same time!

These pics should give an idea of what I've been doing so far.
