DC external Connecting box

Postby southpennrailroad » Thu Feb 16, 2012 1:12 pm

I always have to open my back doors of my cargo trailer to disconnect my DC charging wire that I use to charge the battery with my Honda 2000 generator. I already accidentally cut the wire went looking for a good way to prevent this from happening again. So I finally found the perfect box to place on the outside (probably on the slope of the fender) to have a connector to the battery with a quick disconnect. The battery is inside the trailer and I always have to open the back doors to disconnect the charging wire from the battery when I leave. This will help greatly. Yes! I will color the sides inside so as to not make the wrong (reverse the wires) connections.

I was looking for a larger secure box to shove the charging wire in so as to let it be stored in while traveling but this is the next best thing. I could just disconnect and toss the wire in with the generator. Besides I think while traveling the larger box may open and the wire might fall out.

What are the dimensions and where did you find it. The Progressive Dynamics transfer relay is in a huge box and I am going to have to put it in something smaller.

5" X 4" X 3" It says Comcast on it and I ripped out the phone connecting guts from it as I only wanted the plain back to put in two bolts with nuts and washers to connect with the battery. Plastic grey. It won't be flush mounted but bolted to the fender back slope not the main face of the trailer. I am at the library now so no picks are planned until Icomlete the job. Can't wait!

It's a connection box used for intermediate connections or splices in telecommunications wiring. I think maybe the brand name might be "Panduit", but I could be wrong on that (it's been over 11 years since I used them).

You might want to check in Lowe's or the other Big Box stores' electrical section to see if they have an empty plastic box that would serve your needs. Some of the low-voltage boxes used for outdoor low-voltage always reminded me of these telco plastic boxes.

Good thought. I had been looking at the Radio Shack project boxes but they do not have one the right size and I had not thought in terms of telecommunications boxes.

After all the looking I could not find anything suitable and ended up with a RS project box. I also decided that I would have to stick with my "modular" approach so that the inverter can be left home when we will be camping in parks with AC. Placing the inverter in the rear with the water heater and plumbing just does not seem like a great idea if there is a leak and putting it in the tongue box with the battery when needed just works out better. I have attached SB50 Power Poles to the inverter and already have a plug attached to the battery useful for other applications.
