Mounting a propane tank on a v-nose

Postby Stainless » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:59 am

Hi,

I am getting closer to throwing some money at a cargo trailer and the v-nose question is still nagging me. I'd love the extra space, but I've been planning to mount a 20lb propane tank on the tongue.

For those who have gone v-nose, is there room to mount a tank on the tongue if I'm willing to move the jack away from the stock location? It seems clear that the tank would stick out a bit on the sides, but is it enough of a problem to worry about contacting the truck during really tight turns?

If it's just not viable, where do v-nosers put the propane? I'm not willing to remove the thing every time I pack up camp, because I intend to have the fridge running while I drive.

Thanks!

On most V-Nose trailers, there is not a lot of room between the tip of the tongue to the front trailer wall. Moving the jack is an idea but as you can see on my CT, there are not a lot of options.

IIRC, someone on this forum did mount a 20 lb propane off to the side of the tongue frame via a welded on bracket so you may want to go back through the old threads here for ideas.

Personally, I would be inclined to go with a 10 lb tank, but then I don't plan on (yet) on running a fridge or furnace) These 10 lb tanks come in different models such short/wide and tall/narrow with the tall/narrow being my preference. There are also the composite tanks available for both 10 and 20 sizes.

Lastly some trailer manufacturers offer extended tongues on their trailers. Not sure if this would apply to V-Nose models but something for you to check into.

I just went out did a mock up for you on my very pointy V nose with what I consider a very short 18 inch tongue and a 35lb tank (that I was going to use).
There is plenty of room for the tank if you have 18 inches from the V to the center of the ball. There is also no problem with the jack hitting the bumper but it is held in place with a pin so it can be remove for a super tight emergency turn on a single lane gravel road or to block the front end up and remove the jack to make it more difficult to steal.
I have since decided to mount a very large battery here (that needs to vent) and use a Coleman stove (have become sort of a collector) due to we like to cook outside as much as possible.

Wow, talk about going above the call of duty. Thanks for the photo! That's exactly what I needed to see. Looks like a v-nose is the way to go.

Thanks again to both of you.

That is a huge tank. Most summers, I only use 3-4 of those disposable propane tanks for cooking on the Coleman stove which most of time is done during our annual campfire bans.

If I decide to go with a propane fridge and furnace, that would probably be the right size tank to use.

Also your sidewind jack looks like an idea also. I see a similar swivel/sidewind 1000 lb capacity jack on the Princess Auto website for $54.00.

On a v-nose, there's quite a bit of space in the front that you could re-capture to help find space to store the propane tank. Probably easiest to figure out by removing the boards on the wall in the front - but what you can do is remove some of the diamond plate and expose unused space behind it which would allow the propane tank to sit probably 6 inches further back. You'd have to enclose that space you opened up, but it's dead space right now!

If that doesn't make sense, let me know and i'll sketch it out.

I have accepted the fact that my LP tank will not go on the tongue of my V nose trailer. There is just not enough room. I would have to weld up a custom bracket and even then, it would limit my turning radius. It's just too risky.
The only thing the LP is used for is the furnace. I will only use the furnace in the early spring or late fall for deer hunting.
If I don't carry my LP tank and ever feel the need for some quick heat just to take the chill out of the air I could carry a small electric heater. (if I'm plugged in)

I plan on putting mine INSIDE the "V" in a sealed box with a vent to the outside. I'll just make a box out of 3/8" ply and seal it with caulk or weather stripping and a screw down lid.

The weld on 5,000 lb side mount, side wind jack like mine, is on sale at PA until March 4th for $30. If welding is not your thing, they are available for boat trailers in a clamp on style with wheel.

Here is a pic of two 20Lb bottles on the front of my V-nose.. If you buy a trailer new and plan to convert it, Its a great idea to have them extend the tongue.. If you tell them you want it extended and you plan to use a weight distribution hitch it will give you enough room for a battery box and gas bottles.

I was at the local store on the weekend and did not see any of the side mount / side wind jacks that I wanted on the shelves and I had forgot to ask before I left. Thanks for the reminder.

I had read in another Forum of vanishing BBQ Tanks for Meth cooking. Guess there's something to it.
