Never a negative comment, had one guy with a custom hauler and a 5th wheel rig get jealous and throw a little tantrum when gawkers walked past him to see the teardrop though. :)

Anybody else get attitude from rv-ers

Postby DriverOne » Mon Feb 27, 2012 1:57 am

My wife and I own Ford Festivas. We live and love the "small life". We're not really short people, although that's our last name. It's just that simplicity is key. The campsites we've gone to have been largely devoid of Super Sleepers and Continental Coaches, for a big reason: Fuel prices. I'll not mislead by letting anyone assume that I currently own a TD, but I myself am an enthusiast, and I'll be building one within the year, if things go well. Either way, I agree with everyone who parks their mini camper in "the good spot". So what if you're not the Titanic? It's a camper! Let Ted Bundy take his Hindenburg to an RV resort, 'cause last time I looked, camping was all about being outdoors!

I was camped next to a 20 foot trailer. The couple were fascinated by my raindrop. The wife's comment to the husband was 'see, I told you you could get something smaller.'

I had a fella in a class C motor home offer to trade me even up at our fall 08 gathering.

Alas, I had to turn him down as I didn't have enough gas money in my pocket to get the big monster home.

It was a tongue in cheek gesture but I took it as a very nice compliment :D

That was a nice gesture! It's a shame he didn't truly mean it. A trade like that could net you several more tiny trailers!

We get positive comments all the time. Frequently they come from tent campers who want to stay in something warm. Other RV owners want to look and 'take a tour' of our little rig.

The only time we've had a negative comment was when we were at a car show. Some people who spent too much time at the wine tasting booths thought our trailer was reconditioned from the mid to late 40's. Of course, as drunk as they were, they were going to argue about something...

Same here, always run into nice people on the road who travel and camp. The only comments I get from people are sometimes relative. "It's so small", or It's basically a mattress on wheels isn't is" or, "I don't think I could travel in a little thing like that".

But last year on a rafting trip with a dozen of them, I had the back hatch outdoor galley and the 40 ft tarp in the rain..... no complaints.

After 8 tears of full-timing on the road in a 28 ft motorhome, I found that most of the big-boys were friendly when out walking their dog, but isolationists once back at their RV sites. I learned early on, not to walk between their picnic table and their rig, because that was "Their Space!" Not so with the wonderful TnTTT crowd. Now-days, when approached by a fellow who is traveling in his "Coach", I greet him with a smile and good intentions. My favorite response, when I see I am getting the stink-eye for having such an unusual and tiny rig, I am ready with my usual answer, when they ask if they can open the door of my teardrop and have a look-see.

"Sure, you can do that," I say "if you will answer just one question for me. When was the last time a perfect stranger asked you if he could open the door to your "Coach" and check out the inside?" To this is usually get the, "Well, I guess never." And then, I tell him to go ahead and open the door and check out my TD. Hopefully this gets the message across that I am just a friendly old guy, that just wants to get along, no matter what size RV, large or small. I guess the bottom line is, I'm having a much better time in the campgrounds with my tear, than I ever did with my 12 mpg gas-guzzler, when no one approached me any closer than the other side of my picnic table.
:D 8) Roly ~~

It is not real often that I get negative comments, the gawkers outwiegh the neysayers. The maiden voyage for #1, two park maintanence workers followed me in and had to get the nickle tour, before I was even unhooked. Coming back from Minden the first year, an rv followed me about 20 miles, we both happened to stop at WalMart in Yankton, SD and they asked me (laughingly) If I knew how much the sun reflected off of the back of my teardrop. My favorite has to be when I am camping and sitting out soaking up some sun and reading, the cursious will come up and say, "Oh, you're reading I don't want to bother you." I fold over the page and say you're not bothering me, and then start answering questions and give them the nickle tour. Have always thought of making a sign saying, "Nickle tours, FREE today only". When I take my now 9 year old nephew camping he will make a sign saying "Free tours" and he loves showing the teardrop off, including the hidden stereo.
The neysayers don't bother me too much, cause they usually make their quick snide comments and move on.
If I could shut my brain off, I could save myself alot of time, money and effort.

The most common question I get is, "You sleep in that"? I answer, "Yes, and my daughter too".

I actually DID have someone ask me about the site I got. I got a big rig pull through spot (concrete, electric, water, and sewer). My answer to them was, "Yeah, isn't it awesome just how much room I have"!? The way I look at it is, if I pay the fee for the site and get it before they do, OH WELL!!! But that was the only time, and since I played dumb they just went on their own way.

I did offer my site to an older couple one time. It was their first time out with their 35 ft TT. I had a pull through site and they got a back in one. The guy thought about it and decided he had to learn sooner or later how to back it up, so they opted to keep their own spot. Most people have been curious and amazed and very nice (even if they wouldn't want a teardrop themselves).

Personally, I think it's kinda funny when I park my little guy sport in between two huge mobile homes. Reminds me of canned ham between two loaves of bread.

I'm anticipating lots of people asking about mine...it's, well, very unusual. I have already been asked if I can stand up in it (really??? Only if there was a hole in the floor!!) and I've gotten the "you'll get tired of that little thing really soon and get a real trailer"..Huh?? Honestly, I still like my backpacker's tent, but it's not so good in the cold and rain..

I can't wait to show off the Grasshopper. I know it will stump people ("it's not a teardrop..what is it??) And when I give them the tour, they will be amazed that yes, I do have a dinette inside!!

I'm hoping the Grasshopper's unique look will cause more curiosity that negativity. Of course I thought that of the Vespa, too. But people have seen Vespas...not many have been lucky enough to see a Grasshopper...

Can you tell I love my trailer?? 2 weeks and she's right here with me..finally!!

I like parking my tear between those RV busses. You get one of those on either side of you and even THEY feel like they have more room to stretch their arms. I know they are either in their RV's or right outside of them. They are the best security system for my tear. Eventually they warm up to me and break the ice!

I have a hole in the floor of my TD and I can stand up in it.

The next one will also get a hole in the floor. But this time meant that way from the beginning and not an after thought.

I've never had anything but envy. I camp with VWs and the Puck is the ultimate VW accessory.

Everytime I go to pay my storage lot fee, the manager tells me again how many people stopped to look and enquire about Reba.
