Alternative to CPES in Canada

Postby Volvord » Thu Apr 23, 2009 8:48 pm

Hello all

I came across a product that might interest some.
I am well into my build of a 10' Grumman2 and with all the information on this forum on how critical it is to use CPES I started to search for a local supplier/distributor only to be told by the Rot Doctor that there are no distributors in Canada. Yes the Rot Doctor will ship to Canada for a cost almost equal to the price of their product.

I figured there had to be an alternative and I think I found it, a product called S1 produced by Industrial Formulators Inc.. This product appears to be very similar to CPES and available across Canada.

I bought some and will be testing it shortly, but all the research I have found and in talking with the staff at Industrial Plastics it sounds like a solution for us Canadians.

Hers are some links:

Has anyone else heard of this product or tried it?

Can't speak for either one of these products, but your Volvo-Ford is cool. Have you ever actully recorded any 0-60 or 1/4 mile speds yet?

Thanks Ricky

Have not had the chance to really get into the 1/4 mile yet, I have taken a run or two which was more of a learning experience for me, time was 13.6 that included a VERY SLOW reaction time.
I am looking forward to hooking the Teardrop to it

You don't have to use CPES. A lot of folks here speak highly of RAKA.... As for what you've found, I've never heard of it but that doesn't mean it's not okay. It might work just fine.

Maybe, if you check around locally at the paint stores in your area, someone will be able to supply some information or advice on it. It doesn't hurt to ask. One of the questions you might want start out with at the paint store is: " How will your varnish <or paint> work with this product? See if they've heard of it and what they think. You'll need the answer to that question anyway and it opens the door to conversation with them assuming you’re considering using their product as a final finish.

Best wishes with whatever you decide to do!

Thanks Sharon

I did check and there does not seem to be any Canadian distributors for RAKA either, (we have a great country but getting certain items is often frustrating or expensive). I have talked to two major paint suppliers and they have offered to do reliability testing on the epoxy treated wood to test durability of the finish. I plan on using an aluminum skin so my concern was more edge protection of the plywood to prevent delamination just in case moisture did penetrate.

We have a place in toronto called Noah's, who sell West and East system epoxy. They also sell CPES, but they call it APES. It's a 50/50 mix of hardener and epoxy... You mix it and then let it sit for 45 minutes bfore you use it. Works great.

Alternative to CPES in Canada

Postby Koko65 » Tue Feb 28, 2012 11:45 am

Just an update.

I was able to get S1 sealer at Industrial Plastics here in Kelowna. The smallest size is 2L (1L ea. part A & B) and costs $78. It is suppose to soak into the wood down to the cellular level to truly seal the wood. 2 to 3 coats is recommended.
