I guess I can look at this as a lesson well learned, but just a bit too late. I thought she was safe, curled up in her little fuzzy pet bed on the passenger seat. She never roamed the car, or even stepped onto the console between us. With water and food on the floor, she had her own space, which I now realize was a poor decision. It looks like someone has given her a new home, even though they know how to reach me by calling the animal shelter's number shown on the tag. Some folks are honest, some are not. I feel what goes around, comes around. Perhaps they'll make the call.

Roly:

I don't know about your area but in LA all shelters micro chip the dogs and any vet can read the chip. He may still show up.
You should check with the shelter.

My dogs ride in the back seat only, sometimes in a crate and sometimes with the seat belt.

So sorry you lost your dog. Can you tell us where you lost her? I can post on FB to my friends to keep an eye out for her.

Maybe she will turn up this weekend..maybe someone has her but doesn't have a day off to turn her in until the weekend. Don't give up yet. Still :worship: that you get Dixie back.

Must be the week for lost Westies.......Image

Thor was kidnapped 2 weeks ago right out of the house. He was my recliner buddy and that's where we slept most nights.

Guess the soon to be EX wanted him also.

The diving dog syndrome is very common and very dangerous. Sadie my Scottish terrier was on my lap helping me drive one minute and the next was out the window. By some stroke of dumb luck I caught her by the scruff of her neck mid flight and was able to drag her back in but she WAS in mid air and gone. We were headed to the 09 Summer tri state gathering and on a 2 lane highway at 60 MPH there wouldn't have been much hope if she acheived launch.

I had a cocker, Penny, who was notorious for the same stunt. She would see a critter and give chase right out the window. Luckly both times it happened I was either at a crawl turning a corner or in a slow zone in a residential neighborhood. One summer day I took her with me to get a building permit and it was hot so I left the windows down and tethered her on her leash to the door handle. BIG MISTAKE ! Luckily I made it back to the car at just the right moment as she was hanging by her neck outside the car running in place trying to climb back in the window. A minute more and she would have hung herself.

So if ya love em maybe seat belts are the best answer

We will cross our fingers for ya Roly I bet Dixie comes home :worship:

One of my biggest fears is my dog getting loose and running away (as much as he loves me he really hates the "come" command). I and my wife are totally responsible for his wellbeing and we take that responsibility very seriously just like he were a little child. I never, NEVER, put him in the car without being on a leash, and the leash loop is run through the seatbelt so that once I open the door he cannot get out until I am ready for him to get out. Wally has very strict parents...but ya know, he has never complained about it once!

My heart goes out to everybody who has ever lost a dog.

Dixie left the car in Lake Elsinore, right at a busy intersection. I have gone back and posted "lost dog" signs, complete with her photo. I have made many trips to our local animal shelter, where they now know me by my first name. Dixie was one of their favorite adoptees and took pics of both of us before I took her home. Of course they will call me if she shows up and it is their policy to always read the chip, if available on all rescued dogs. They have even called me to say she hasn't shown up yet, so are anxious to find her right away. If the chip is read by any animal hospital or doctor, they'll call me as well. I'm hopeful this will all end well.

Roly,

I hope you find your dog soon.

We have trained our dogs to stay in the yard. And more than once someone has left the back gate open. A few minutes later they are at the front door barking to get in. How did you get out there we ask?

As for when they are in the car, they are in their crate. They love in there, cause it means they are going to the park!

That is 1 reason that I ALWAYS buy a vehicle with roll up windows or when the key is out of the ingition, u can't roll down the widnows. Am REALLY sorry 2 hear of ur loss :( , and if i ever lost my friend after 9 years, I would be heart broken. Some of the teardrop community knows Ebony and she is my buddy and goes EVERY where I go and she will be on her 27 teardrop gatherings when the dam gathering is here. :D She will soon be 10 just before the dam, so I am going 2 get a birthday cake for just her. :new-bday: Hope u find ur puppy.
Why do anything unless it is fun with your teardrop

Unfortunately, the same exact thing happened with our year-old Westie in the pickup truck last fall! :( My wife was turning into the dog park driveway, he climbed onto the armrest, opened the window, and jumped out. The new-style power window buttons used by some automobile manufacturers will allow the window to open just by pressing down on them, so all it takes is a misplaced paw on the switch and down goes the window. (Another caution is that the power windows are "live" as a convenience feature until a door is open...even with the key off.) Our story has a happy ending though, since he was tethered to the seat belt buckle clipped to an under-arm harness and not his collar. He was dangling outside the truck window until she finished the turn, and the only injury to either of them was from the shock of what happened.

Keeping my fingers crossed that Dixie finds her way back home.....
