I watched a couple of the Doomsday Peppers programs because I felt there might be a few good hints for boondocking. What struck me is the mono-focused one scenario obsession with each of the 'participants' in the shows, the Yellowstone mega volcano or financial collapse or... In each case the obsession borders on paranoia, the wrong side of the border actually. When your life and treasure is spent entirely on this it is past nuts.
One of the classic Science Fiction themes is post apocalypse with many variations on this theme from alien invasion in H.G.Wells War of the Worlds to Nuclear mutual destruction Alas Babylon and On the Beach and more recently 2012.
My feeling is that Compass Rose is as much preparation as I will take with a couple of cases of MRE's but really if it gets bad enough I don't know that I want to survive. I am limited to about 500 miles on gas and NW Ohio is about as stable geologically as you can get and the only real danger is Tornadoes and we don't get the big ones. Yes i fear the political stupidity of Washington and Columbus and hope that the revolution will be at the ballot box but my main fear there is for my grand children.
