I watched a couple of the Doomsday Peppers programs because I felt there might be a few good hints for boondocking. What struck me is the mono-focused one scenario obsession with each of the 'participants' in the shows, the Yellowstone mega volcano or financial collapse or... In each case the obsession borders on paranoia, the wrong side of the border actually. When your life and treasure is spent entirely on this it is past nuts.
One of the classic Science Fiction themes is post apocalypse with many variations on this theme from alien invasion in H.G.Wells War of the Worlds to Nuclear mutual destruction Alas Babylon and On the Beach and more recently 2012.
My feeling is that Compass Rose is as much preparation as I will take with a couple of cases of MRE's but really if it gets bad enough I don't know that I want to survive. I am limited to about 500 miles on gas and NW Ohio is about as stable geologically as you can get and the only real danger is Tornadoes and we don't get the big ones. Yes i fear the political stupidity of Washington and Columbus and hope that the revolution will be at the ballot box but my main fear there is for my grand children.

As I see it the biggest problem of bugging out is the difficulty of obtaining fuel. It occurs to me that once the tank is empty that may be as far as you get. As a horseman you might consider a horse drawn covered to be more practical as horses can eat anywhere there is grass and keep going long after fuel supplies have dried up - assuming you can keep hungry people from eating them.

Let's talk now about the need for tin foil hats to protect us from aliens frying our brains. Personally, I'm opting for the ultimate protection; I'm using my dutch oven. But boy the price you have to pay for not scrambling your brain. That thing is heavy! But, I'm wearing it. I know it's coming... soon... really. I think Tom Cruze agrees with me.

Slow, you already live in the country. It's the city folk who would be in trouble. Also, it wouldn't matter if it was propane or white gas as any kind of gas would be hard to get. For the kind of disaster that you speak of, I would guess that some water-proof matches and a supply of wood might be your best bet. If you're out in the country where you have water and shelter and enough land, you could make do. All you'd need is a gun to protect what you've already got. I'm guessing you have that. One more thing that might be helpful is a book that identifies what wild plants are edible. If things get bad, the best place to be, if you live in the country, is at home, where people know you and think of you like family.

Yep. Them UN Parking spots are all ready. You may think they are for handicapped folks, but the color matches the hats that the UN world taker overers wear. We good folks will be wearing our tin hats but will not have parking places to park in whilst we fight them UNers. THEY will have parking places which will be an advantage.

So, while you may want to bug out, you will not be able to find a legal parking place. You may as well stay home.

Mike you could not be sitting in a better spot. I don't know where you would bug out to. We will all be leaving the cities and heading for the rural areas of the country. Well that's your house Mike. When you have time clear a spot in the pasture for 50 Teardrops. You can grow your own food. No one will be invading Wyoming. The air is pure. It sounds like you are in a great spot . Stock up on bullets and heirloom seeds. In a total collapse that will be currency. Dollars will buy you nothing. Fuel and energy will be the first disruptions to cause chaos. As soon as the AC and the TV's don't work people will freak out. We already have rolling brown outs, new EPA regulation are squeezing the coal plants. The bulk of our electricity comes from there. Add this to the fact that all the new electric cars we will be having to buy all need to be plugged into the grid. Looks like it may be time to order one of those personal wind mills from China. It 's really a no brainer. Just take the 10 grand the Government is giving you to buy a Volt and spend it on the new wind mill.

Ya but it too close to the the Mega Volcano sitting under Yellowstone, actually if it blows the US as we know it is toast and likely the world, well we will not have to be at all concerned about global warming.

It portrays another take on survival post disaster.
Just look what happened after Katrina.
You will be on your own & need to be able to take of yourself.
Will be easier in a group than solo.

Read Lucifer's Hammer, a book about a post asteroidal world and how the survivors dealt with that.

If Yellowstone blows you will probably not care cause you will be dead. My bug out (If I ever get done with the tear and put one together) will include fire starter stick the kind you strike with your knife, water cache in several accessible locations as well as booze cache (some liquid money to trade with), a good knife/machete. I would head to the middle of Idaho where my dad has 55 acres in the middle of nowhere. I guess my supply caches should be located somewhere there. I should learn about edible plants and how and which kind of shelters work best in different parts of the country just in case I can't get the tear there.. a gun and plenty of ammo, and perhaps a bow and arrow.

I agee with others here.....you have the kind of place that most folks would bug out to. If you have good access to water (without the aid of electric pumps), animal stock and hand tools to manage what you have, than you would be in good shape. A sight better than an urban apartment dweller with no place to go when supply lines and government checks stop flowing.

I recall you mentioning a while back about selling your fresh corn to folks near the road as a way to make some extra money. I bet in the event of some aweful calamity, like an economic collapse, you could then charge a premium for that corn.
