It portrays another take on survival post disaster.

I have not read the book or seen the movie. I've heard it is very depressing, and I don't need that.

An anecdote: The 99 road that accesses a view point to Mt St Helens was closed to car traffic due to a partial washout. So, I took my dog and bike and rode in there. I hadn't had The Used Dog very long, and both of us needed exercise. I rode in. There was a catering truck setting up tents. There were people moving rocks and sticks around on the road. Then there were some guys in Camo with rifles slung over their shoulders, and a boy. We said hello, my dog sniffed them where dogs do. On we went.

Later, I found out my dog had sniffed Vig Mortensen--they were filming scenes for that movie in the blast zone of the volcano.

What happens, happens and I'm not going to waste time with excessive worrying. Yes, I have stuff to survive a while because we often get cut off by flooding. Nuff said.

Shouldn't politicians be spending their time trying to make things better instead of causing panic and worry in the first place? Sorry if that is too political, but it rankles me that they spend time on something that isn't likely to happen, instead of solving current problems.

I actually have a day pack set up for survival situations. Everytime I go out, be it camping or just for a day of wheeling, I carry this with me.

1) straight blade hunting/camp knife
2) wet weather gear
3) 3 different ways of starting a fire. (water proof matches, regular size flint and steel, small flint and steel for backup.)
4) cotton balls and vaseline- these have multiple uses but they make great tinder for starting fires. They have to be 100% cotton though.
5) 3 - liters of tap water (Gotta love camel backs)
6) high engery foor bars
7) First aid supplies

I am looking for and need to add a good way to purify water. This will allow me to carry less water weight and add more food or other items.

The small flint and steel can be carried on a belt loop or in a pocket.

Oh that's a good one Bruce. I have to update my bugout page one of these days, and that looks like the perfect addition.

Not to be contrary, but in the "back country" out here there are very few garden hoses for water supply.

While we're on water purification.....thought I'd post this about SODIS for those who've not heard of it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_water_disinfection

Uses clear plastic water bottles for slow UV water disinfection. A poor man's Steripen. Is slower, but it does work. You still drink the cooties, but they've been left inert by the sun's UV.

Sounds yummmy

Personally I feel people get all in a tizzy about the end of what ever. Me, I am to old and fat to worry about surviving the what ever. I do have enough guns I may take a few zombies with me. Or some street punks. The Mega Yellowstone volcano? We will know something is coming long before it blows. Give us time to say our last good byes as there is not a lot of places we can go to get away. Massive asteroid? Probably about the same as a mega volcano. Mayan calendar ending? Do like me every December and buy a new calendar. So far I have saved the world every time. I figure if one wants to head to the hills to survive one needs to be two tank fulls of gas from any large cities full of idiots. That leaves a few slivers of deserts/high cold mountains to try and live in. Probably won't work out to good for the many many thousands of people flooding into those areas. And the locals all ready there will not take to kindly to the new people. So what am I getting at? I think it is most important to worry about the high probability natural events where you are and have enough supplies on hand for at least a week. A hurricane or a flooding river is about the only one you will have time to run from. River flooding you probably will not need to go far. Hurricanes i don't know. Here in Idaho we don't run from the weather. Political shenanigans? Get involved and try to get some common sense back ( ok that even cracked me up )

"Sounds yummy"

"Yummy" can be relative. A road killed possum looks mighty tasty on a spit if you've not eaten in a week. SODIS is tayored for the third world. I mentioned it just in case we become the forth world (via whatever kind of mechanism).
