POC POC'S - Seen any lately ?

Postby grizz » Sun Mar 04, 2012 5:43 am

Had a PM, and request to see if I knew what Poc Poc's were from a Forum Member......

Before I could go and Google "Abney and Teal" he had sent another PM with some screen grab pics.

Could I , or would I considder having a go at making some of these little guys for his 3 year old daughter? She loves them, but there are no Poc Poc's out there to be bought.

Some sample screen grabs.

Of course I could not say no..... the story of my life?

So I found some wood, which is off the front of an old Oak drawer I had rescued from a skip in Southampton a couple of weeks ago, I had other plans for the drawer, but this is as good a use as any.

About 20mm thick, aged, and furniture grade.... perfect.

I removed all the metal furniture from it and then proceeded to draw a few different sized outlines on a breakfast cereal box, cut out, transfer and then started cutting them out.

I had been looking on Ebay for a few weeks for a cheap Fret saw / Scroll saw for the last few weeks, and then yesterday Mickey came around for a cuppa and I mentioned it to him, and he loaned me his so that I could get started.

Drawer Front.

Prototype.... they are buggers due to the curve on the neck, and the fact the Fret saw really is made for cutting thin stuff and balsa for moddeling.

Image

These little guys must take at least 45min to an hour each to complete right down to waxing if you add in all the process actions.... amazing how time flies. Getting the inner neck sanded by hand and getting the roundness fairly uniform takes time.

What I like is that these toys will be very much Tactile and also allow the child to create its own stories.

I then made a first one in Oak, and finished it right down to the waxing stage. This was while my mate Pete was turning himself some light switch pulls on the lathe.

Posed up next to the Prototype, I am happy with the look and finish.

Image

I have made them between 70mm and 100mm high, so that they are a decent size to play with.

Here is the rest of the group cut out.

At this point we went off to fetch Fish and Chips for Dinner.

The rest will be finished when I get a chance.

Hi BC Toys, I am neither a father , nor a grandfather.... though I have filled the role before, and also got a couple of kids aged 16, 20 years old in the deal when I married Nicola.

I make things for people if I can and usually charge waaayyy below the minimum wage , but it is a hobby and the little commissions make up for materials, electricity and tool wear.

The little toys take more time to make than they are worth by a long shot, but as mentioned, they are very tactile and feel real good.

Carried on with the shaping of the rest of these today.

The sanding is done in 3 stages, rough shaping, then smoothing down and lastly every piece is hand finished with one of those small triangular orbital type sanders and also a small "barrel " I made to get inside the tight curves.

All done with the various grades op sanding, next job is to add the eyes and personalities..... yep, they are all different.

Eyes done and first heavy wax coat done.

You will note they all have a slightly different look.

The large ones include Papa Poc Poc, Mamma Poc Poc and Uncle Poc Poc, then the kids are all different, with my favourite being the youngest sister who is both naughty, and loves playing in the dirt.
There is also the eldest Poc Poc child from next door who comes to play with this gang. You can see, he is a bit lighter and not as adventurous.

Once I have a destination for them, they get a final wax coat and then they will all be bundled up and sent off to their new home.

Rian,

When do you start building your poc poc drop? And are you going to have real poc pocs on the outside, or just decals that look like poc poc's?

Mike...
The quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten, so build your teardrop with the best materials...

Hi Mike, just settling down here, 7.30pm.

I am not sure when the next build will happen, as the one I had planned and collected stuff for, for our daughter has been kicked into touch.... as she is talkig of moving to Australia, and I am not building a small super light just to see it wasted.

So I guess the next one, especially a Poc Poc Drop willl be a while in coming around.

Trust you are well and enjoying the weekend too.
