Anyone's Galley have a 3.2-3.6 cuft fridge?

Postby Big Dave » Thu Jan 19, 2012 3:56 pm

I know, I know . . . coolers are great. I've done them for years, but I'm going with a fridge. What I'd like is a 3.2-3.6 cuft unit with a separate freezer like this:

Has anyone seen one like this in a galley?

My questions are:
1. Will it fit under the curve of the hatch without being 2ft back, it's 33" tall

2. Which is better, counter space while cooking or ice cream while camping? :applause:

I've got a standard GE 4.5 with no top freezer. I wish I had gotten a top freezer section. but oh well. maybe that one will become my shop beer cooler later and I will get a two door model.
I found I Really needed all that fridge space for a week camping + a cooler.
I constantly rotated the ice trays to keep some in the cooler to cut down on buying it. Yeah it made 4 trays each time.

Yeah, we're planning on a week at the beach in July, that's a lot of ice. Plus I'm really over everything swimming in hot dog water once the ice melts.

I should have mentioned this is in a 5x11 raindrop style tear. I like your conversion, I kind of wish I looked at that a little more before I got started down this path.

That looks like the exact model I'm thinking of for my VW bus. But I'm not sure if I can justify dedicating that much space to it for just me. I so don't like to cook when camping. Actually, it's not the cooking but the cleaning up after cooking.

It's only 19" deep.

I found a brand new one on Craigslist for $65 right after I posted this, so It's here and it's going in. I am a recovering Dub junkie, I've had 19. Before I knew of the existence of the teardrop trailer I attempted to build an "VW Airstream". I took two late model busses and gutted them, I even cut all the engine compartment steel out. Then cut the nose off of the first bus right behind the front doors and was going to weld the rear of another bus in it's place. Unfortunately, it was at my girlfriends dads shop and was disposed of after our breakup. Plywood is much easier.

Easy there cowboy!
I have leveling jacks at all four corners and on this side of the 'ol Miss there's not as much room to camp that's not a campground, and all of those campgrounds have outlets. I wanted a small camper so I didn't have to debate whether it was worth hauling it to the beach for the weekend. Now when it's done we can enjoy some nice frozen adult beverages on the beach. 8) :wine:
If you don't like the fridge, you're really going to hate the home theater setup.

Dave, one of the nicest things about "rolling" your own is being able to build what YOU want to camp the way YOU want to...at one time, all the camping I(we) did was boony style and if you were to fire up a generator, you would have been shot...nowadaze, with the change in State trespass laws, that is a thing of the past unless you lease or own the property and most all camping is at State Parks or such and they all have electricity...so, build whatcha want and use it like ya wanna...that's what I say!!!!!!

Thanks Jack, you've been a huge help through the years. I really appreciate all of the advice and support. When I get this thing built I'm going to catch up to you at a gathering and make you a very large margarita!

Thanks, Dave!

But ... NUTS! Looks like they're all 110v only ... we need 3-way ... guess we'll just keep looking.

Won't you have to come up with some clever venting to put a regular fridge in a teardrop galley? It probably needs a gap between the heat exchanger on the 'back' (well, now it's facing the front of the trailer) and the galley bulkhead so that there is some airflow to get the heat out. Holes in the floor will let air in the bottom but it's also going to need some upper holes to let the hot air out - or maybe even some clever duct to get the hot air right up to the roof?

Yep, Andrew ... they need venting ... especially the 3-ways! No real big deal if you plan ahead ... best if the 'fridge is against one side wall or the other ... a screened grate in the floor under the 'fridge lets air in, another screened vent in the side (above the unit) lets the hot air out ... for the gas operation, you'll (we'll) need an exhaust port, typically through the side wall (but, a well-sealed roof-jack will do the trick, too). All in the "plan" ... 8) ...! Just gotta find the right 'fridge ... ...

Sorry for the false alarm Grant. I should have known it wouldn't be that simple.

Do you have a grate that you like? I was thinking something like this for the floor:

I'm still not sure what to use on the side.

That looks like an interesting grate, Dave! Just be sure you put a screen in it to keep the tiny flying critters & creepy-crawlers out ... ...! What ever you use, make sure it has enough square inches to allow adequate air flow ... the owners manual for your 'fridge will tell you how much.

As far as side vents go, I'm kind of partial to some of the engine cover vents on inboard boats ... check out almost any marine supply store ... but I've also used foundation vents with a nice drip cap over:

88802

This one was a 2-way (12v/110v), so didn't need an exhaust port.
