Newbie

Hi, my name is Bob and the wife's is Patti. We have been off road camping for many years and my wife's idea of a tear drop is a 42 foot Stellar 5th Wheel, some how she just did not get the idea.

I have been building trailers for quite awhile, originally owned a ProTrac franchise back in the mid 80's. Did it for about 5 years, sold the business, but still built trailers for friends when needed.

Approximately 4 years ago a friend asked me to build him an expedition trailer, basically steel boxes attached with a roof top tent. Not much of a design challenge or a thing of beauty. I have built a few of them. But it did not fit the wife's tear drop mold of 42 feet, with shower, potty, AC, heat, TV and the assorted other necessities of my lovely wife. Needless to say, camping was less than enjoyable, normally going by myself. And when I was lucky(?) enough for her to go with me, it was a lot of (female dog)ing. '

We have been married for 43 years, and going places with out her, is not normal, nor very seldom enjoyed. She kinda runs the show so to speak, alas, I am well trained :NC .

Last summer I decided to make an off road trailer that she would enjoy, I wanted something that was aggressive, strong, attention grabbing and would go anywhere I could drag it and not come appart. But it had to have the my wife's Tear Drop requirements, well at least most of them, I chucked the 42 foot one right off the bat!!!!

Minimally it had to have a Tempurpedic mattress, AC and heat, water for showers and cooking, stove, fridge, micro wave, hot water heater, awning, LCD TV, stero to fit her Tear Drop requirements. I decided it needed a Torflex axle and brakes and a multi axix coupler.

Unfortunatly my wife does not have the abillity to invision a Tear Drop under her required length. I ended up cutting out a cardboard sillouete of what I planned. Setting it up in the garage, with the window cut out and waving at her when she came in, her first question was that the restroom. Finally she understood, allowing the build.

So now we are owners of a Tear Drop type trailer, nothing like the traditional design, more modern, more aggressive and will anywhere. WE have used it 9 times so far and she has loved it every single time. I think I finally made a winner, or at least she thinks so. Bigger is not always better, there is hope.

We have decided to manufacture the trailer for sales, you can see it in opperation at www.aspenXtrails.com

Also I will put it in the build thread for all to see if interested.

I am looking forward to meeting all of you and seeing your trailer and your ideas behind them.

Welcome, skersfan. The trailer sounds interesting.

It would be great to see some pictures. Please load your album so we can see them.

I managed to fit satellite TV A/C, space heat, queen size air mattress, battery charger (for air mattress and CB radio) and microwave into our 10 footer. Camp near comfort station takes care of rest.
Happy trails,
Hoyt

I am not to good at that, but you can see most in the build thread and on the web site. http://www.aspenXtrails.com

I will try to figure that posting albums stuff out, but pretty thick when it comes to that stuff.

Unfortunately there are no comfort stations where we normally camp. Our normal areas are Virgin River Rim Trail in Utah at a little over 10,000, Imonook in the San Juans of Southwest Colorado, at a little over 11,500 feet. This year we plan to camp on top of Imogene Pass at 13,810 feet. That being said the nearest comfort site is about 20 miles away. Have to carry it all in and drag it all out in our camping sites. Camping in these remote hard to reach areas requires a different type of trailer.

Thanks for your warm welcome.

My grandparents lived in Cortez. My dad grew up there.
Mesa Verde sure is a nice place.
There are some very good portable facilities available. There are also small privacy tents that can be set up around them.
Happy trails,
Hoyt

Mesa Verde is a beautiful, place and the history the cliff buildings are amazing. We stopped there a couple of years ago on our way home from the FJ Curiser National event. Totally different terrain though, more desert to high plateau area.

Looking forward to heading off to Colorado and then taking the trailer on the Kokopelli trail in Utah. A major off road event follows that in Moab the first week of May.

This link will take you to the build and there are pictures of the inside. This is a rough prototype, I was more concerned with the structure/strength design than the beautiful cabinetry you guys do. With the twisting the frame goes through and harsh pulls that it gets, I was afraid they would not stand up to. After seeing some on this site, I may have to rethink that approach.
