No Wood

Postby Vedette » Mon Mar 12, 2012 11:33 pm

Just realized that my build has "No Wood" in it yet.
So now it has become my "Mission"
I think it is very doable.
My motto is if I can't weld it, I won't use it.

No reason you can't do the whole thing out of aluminum and composites.

If I ever get around to building TD #2, I also plan to build using no wood. It will be a welded aluminum frame with aluminum skin bonded with panel adhesive and some sort of composite material for an interior.

Thanks for the offer, but I think I'll stick with aluminum 8)

My heart goes out to those with no wood. That's why I built a woody before I got too old.

I for one have do love Woody's but when I started looking into teardrop construction I also looked at what fails, and in order it was wood and rust. I have no place to store a trailer inside out of the weather and since we were going to have a large trailer 6 x 10 I wanted it to be as lightweight as possible. And yes I know you can do that with wood as well, although nobody seems to. Most of the trailer seem to be built with 60-year-old technology and are built like tanks not like the airplanes they should be. The framing in compass rose is 1.50 x 1 x .060 aluminum, and it is strong enough for me to stand on the roof.

Well I have bad news.
I had planned for the interior panals to be 1 /16" aluminium.
But, after we got the first one cut out we discovered it was mich havier than the 1/8" hardboard I usually use for car doors, so we hace opted for a 1/16" veneer. Even lighter yet????
Not prepaired to make our teardrop heavier just to say there is no wood,
It is coming along.....5 weeks to go!

No self respecting surfer would be caught dead without his surfboard and a woody.

At least not here in Southern California.

Cheers,

Gus
