Thanks Frank, I was telling someone again recently, it is not always about being able to afford or not being able to afford, but rather about making the choice to make a bit of effort that keeps money in my pocket... and that makes me feel great.

In the mean time.....

Right where do I start??

Had an electician here for 5 hours today at £25/hour to wire the shed up to the mains via a 6mm armoured cable and to fit a consumer unit (Not sure thats the right name for a distribution box)
By the end of the day at 3pm I had 8 plugs linked to the mains and could work any of the machines or lights I have in the shed.
He will be back next Saturday to fit a 4ft strip light and rocker switch at the door, probably another £50.00, then all the wiring and lighting should be done.
Personaly, I would have love to do it all myself, but Nicola put her foot down and said we need a wiring certificate, in case anything ever went wrong.... so I capitulated and did other stuff while Mark sorted the electrics out, the upshot was that I got a bacon sandwich at lunchtime when she fed Mark.... yahoo !

Did I mention that there was a bit of candle holder envy from Nicola's mum after she claimed the first item as a candle holder??

So I decided to make her something nice out of Tulip wood.

Started by measuring out on the wood I had and then cutting out on the bandsaw, after which I used woodglue to laminate the two bits. I will let them dry for 24 hours, which is way more time than needed, and then turn somethig like a candle holder.

Measured and drawn.

Image

Cut out...

Image

After this I cut the grass and kept busy while the shed was being wired.
Once Mark left, I took a bit of what I asume is Sapele Mahogany and started turning some stuff that was on my mind.

Image

I initially tried to make the two right hand knobs with grooves cut in, like the first plate, but it did not work for me, so I re-cut and reshaped them. followed by sanding.

It seems mad, but up to that point took me 2 hours, as mentioned by someone before... wood turning absolutely sucks up time.

Image

Finally after cutting them loose, I had 3 gearknobs.....

HANDMADE and UNIQUE.

I am prepared to sell them on here or elsewhere at what is hopefully sensible money.... at £7.50 each incl postage, unless you want to collect, in which case they are £6.00 each. This is in the UK by the way.

I have marked them 1,2,3 and have not drilled them as various applications will have different shaft sizes.

If interested, please PM me and say which one you want.

I will deal with it straight by time of PM arrival, so if 3 people want the same one, the first PM gets preference.

I want any interested parties to note, these are hand made and not perfect like a factory moulded or mass produced knob. In future I will experiment with adding tops to them as well.

Front/top views.

Image

Bottom, to show the numbers and what you will have to deal with when drilling a hole.

Please note, the Pound coin is just there for illustration.

Image

LAST THING ......

A Captive Ring (I thought it sounded rather rude)

I made this one just to prove to myself and also to try out a custom tool I have made up, to be able to cut around corners.

Image

Hope you like the updates.

Please do leave comments about the knobs and pricing, or send me a PM if you want to be really honest.

Thanks for looking in.

Been busy with work this week, so not much happened.

Got the electrician in tomorrow to fit the strip light for the shed, then that is done too.

I was messing about though, made a simple angel for Nicola to hang from the Christmas tree..... as she loves her tree and ornaments.

This resulted in my being comissioned to make another 30 angels tosell.

So this is what 30 pairs of wings in bulk mode looks like. Keep in mind, once cut, every wing hits the belt sander 4 times, and then is hand sanded around the edges too.

Image

I will start turning the bodies tomorrow some time.

Also ordered by the boss was a trio of tealight candle holders.

Started here....

Image

Ended up here.

Image

Image

The last thing I did was to try out a badge Ruffgeezer (Tim) had sent me in the post, on top of one of the knobs I made last week.
I also drilled a 10mm hole into the bottom of each knob.

I kept one plain, added the Union Jack to one and the third one I used some epoxy to stick one of the modified charms from Primark onto.

Not overly impressed with any of the modded ones, but know that many people would like them as taste fortunately does differ.

Image

So tomorrow, once the electrician is gone, I need to turn 30 chubby little wooden angels.

Oh, and I now have some food colouring to stain some of the stuff I turn, as it gives great finishes.

Missed out on some updates for those of you that are possibly interested.

In the mean time, here is a bit of it.

So, after I finished the initial work on the gearknob, which will get edited further this week, I thought it was wise to do something I wanted to do for myself.

I put the rest of the gate post on the lathe, the plan was to make a captive ring on one end, and then do the rest as a combination of the old rustic wood, and some machined wood, if the cracks down the side allowed me.
This ended up not happening, as the one crack ran too deep, and I was not going to risk the wood and not get a captive ring in one piece.

Started with this centred up. 350mm long.

Parting tool used to mark out the position of what I wanted and where it needed to go.

Shaping up.

Image

This will be a table lamp once i am done with it.

Need to find some old fashioned lamp fittings and also some vintage Oak to use for the base. Then lastly, a neat lamp shade.

Image

Back to work tomorrow, so I guess the next update will be over next weekend.

Thanks for looking in.

Just a quick posting.

I collect foreign number plates from around the world.

Last year I sent a guy in Kansas some of my plates, with the understanding that he would send me some random plates in return.

He asked me to be patient as he needed to gather them.....

Today they landed in the post......

Thanks to Herb.

Enjoyed the plates! It's fun to see a New Mexico plate there. We're the only state in the US that has to put USA on our plates to remind other Americans that we ARE in the USA. Guam also has USA on the plate, and the American Virgin Islands say US, but they aren't states, just territories.

Well, due to a radical change of plans..... (Hanah has anounced that she will be moving to Australia with her guy when they qualify as Radiographer and EMA/Ambulance guy) This build has been halted.

So the donor will be sold off to make some space and also to regain the space in front of the garage taken up by the caravan.

I offered the caravan back to the guy who gave it to me, but he suggested I put it on Ebay and sell it, then split the money with him so that we both get some cash we spent back.

So on Ebay, with 18 watchers withing 6 hours of listing, and 4 different people asking questions.

This is what it looked like after I had cleaned it last weekend.

Remember what it looked like when fetched?

A few hours with a decent pressure cleaner later.

Will be taking some interior pics for the Ebay crowd later too.

Lets hope the right buyer gets it, as it is a lovely caravan, needing some light resto work to see it hold up holiday traffic again.

If you need to see more and are still interested, then a personal viewing is highly recommended.

Hello Grizz & Nicola: All I can say is WOW MAN!!!
That "Caravan" cleaned up very nicely...
You should have no problem finding the right buyer for it.

Terry and I went larger and we bought an 2007 18' Travel Trailer just after last Thanksgiving.

Image

We still have the teardrop. The Travel Trailer is for shorter trips around here and we can go farther in the Teardrop and save on gas. Plus I still have to finish or sell the "Road Toad" as it is now. Do I have any takers???

Hi Johnny, Trust you and Terry are very well and still as much on Honeymoon as we are.

That trailer you got looks like it is a very functional item, and I am sure you will get many good years from it.

Your UPS Hotrod is still my favourite I think, unless you have a 40's pickup hidden out behind a tree.

Yes, it is amazing what a few hours inside and a few hours outside can do.

I am/was tempted to keep it and use it for camping, alternately we did think of renting it out to local contractors at the refinery or nearby harbour.

At up to £100 or $200 per week with no food or ablutions, it is not a bad potential earner, but then it would potentially invade our privacy.

I am sure someone will enjoy cheap camping if they bought it.

Look after yourselves.
