With my renewed fear of water, I decided to put the hinge for the hatch at the highest point possible. Then to further minimize the chance for water to get in, I made the hatch almost vertical.

Suddenly it's looking more like the rockhopper design I did a number of years ago... So I may have to change the name from Weekender to something else...

But for the moment, it's still the Weekender II

a little more blunt like the green lantern in shape. with a draw slide out kitchen,wouldn't there be a quicker build turn around ? I don't know just random thoughts.

If you go for 8 feet of roof, run your ply front to back, then your length wise cut off will work cross ways front or back.
The mini truck camper kick off the back, I did mine that way, sheds water off the roof away from back wall, do a full wall lift, inside the walls, real easy to weatherstrip on all four sides
If you go 10' overall, 10' aluminum is readily available, And I strongly suggest aluminum or membrane roof, properly sealed will last a long time
