Fiberglass tape issue on seam

Postby CliffinGA » Sun Mar 18, 2012 2:58 pm

Ok started sanding today because I put to much dpoxy on and it ran down the sides and though the tear was shiny and pretty as my wife said. I had to sand them down and the tape edges to have that smooth finish and I found than on the seams on the side wall edges the tape had air pockets or cracks. Now I need to get an idea to fix it or best solution that I can live with. Any help is appreciated.

Cliff,
I don't use tape for just the the problems you are having. Tape is usually 9oz. and takes a lot of epoxy to fill, a lot of squeegeeing, or using a bubble roller. The selvage edge leaves a raised area that has to be scraped off and many coats of epoxy are necessary to hide the transition.
Most experienced boat builders use cloth instead of tape. You cut the cloth on a bias to the weave. The cloth tape will follow any curve, won't fray, and fills just as easy as any cloth.
To fix your problem, you could try a heat gun to soften the epoxy, pull the tape with a pair of pliers, and keep heating as you go. Once the tape is removed, you can start over either with my suggestion or a lighter weight tape.

Good luck...
