Lock for hatch

Postby wingrydr57 » Wed Feb 01, 2012 9:25 pm

What do you use for the lock on the galley hatch? I have seen some that look like the old garage door lock (turn the middle handle and two rods slide into a hole on the track)

Thanks for the help! Is this a great site or what!

We use an ABUS snake hasp

It attaches to the back of the hatch then wraps around the corner to catch the loop on the side of the trailer. We have one on each side--simple and effective.

It depends on how your hatch is set up.

You can use an inside latch like this:

But I ended up using a latch like this:

On #2 I used jeep style hood latchs, then I am going to add long throw barrel latchs on the inside, this will mean reaching through the pass through between the cabin and galley to unlock the hatch.

Like Mightydog, I'm going to use similar wraparound hasps, Masterlock, but 4 instead. I have a 49.875" high x 48" wide vertical hatch. I foresee a possible sealing problem unless I clamp the hatch shut all around. I have mounted 3 large hinges on the top edge, and have the bottom edge just below the galley floor seal, so using the wraparound hasps at 4 other points should hold the hatch tight against the seals. Also, there'll be a flexible seal over the junction of body and hatch.

Slow,,,,I like your thinking,,,,,I use two quick release pins thru the side alls into the hatch frame to keep it closed when traveling....the holes double as a point to anchor two 1x2s that hold the hatch open......primative??? yes,,,,but works....just got to remember to secure the hatch at nite to keep the racoons out.....
If you see my harley on a trailer,,,,call the police cause it's being stolen...

I don't have any locks at this time. I use two rubber draw latches to keep the hatch closed.

I do have a stainless steel hasp but have never gotten around to installing it.

We have three latches The RV baggage door slam latch does not work well so I ended up with two Perko flush latches as well in White.

Lol, exactly the same as Shadow except that mine have a square D ring rather than semicircle. You can also get them with a T handle, but only in black.
Perko's p/n for mine is 1031-DP1-(BLK or WHT), MSRP (Canada)= $53.84
The cam is beefy and they're quick to install (a little more work for flush mount but not by much). They're all keyed the same which is great if you're using more than one (I'm using them for four outside hatches plus the door).
perko also makes a cover for them, which I'll be using on the door.

On my TD I used the inside latch that Planovet posted, but I realized that my walls were only 3/4" thick and I only had 1/4 of space before reaching the hatch ribs so I could not step out the walls at all. I did install a metal clip on each side, but I was not comfortable with only having that small bit holding the hatch on, so I used that for the lock and added a simple hasp with a coupler lock running through at the bottom in the middle where it would not be noticed for that extra peace of mind...
