simple awning

Postby wingrydr57 » Sun Mar 25, 2012 4:29 pm

Hello, I am building a 4x8 tear drop and was wondering what people use for an awning, for those rainy days. I know you can buy a side tent but geesh they want alot for them. I found the perfect changing room tent it just pops up but would like something for just sitting outside if its a rainy day.

THanks, Steve W.

Install a length of awning rail then get a cheap tarp with eyelets in it, and get some awning rail hooks at any rv store, they make them for hanging lights and stuff

or a first up shelter

On my first tear, a low budget job, I used a plastic tarp.

I installed snaps in the tarp, and corresponding parts on the top of the trailer, starting in the front near the tongue, and went back to near the hatch.

It worked well and only cost a little.

These are very light weight, take up little room and are very quick to erect.

If you go to a first up type gazebo make sure it's tied down !

I experimented at last falls gathering. We had sustained winds of 15 to 35 MPH ALL weekend. Many took their shelters down 2 were destroyed and one was badly tweeked. Notice mine is nose down at the leading end.( Wind was coming over the trailer as if we were on the highway)
By dropping the leading edge the wind finds it harder to lift the canopy as it is pushing down on the top more than usual. It seemed to work well.

That popup is going on its 5th year. It has seen torrential rain, high winds, snow, freezing rain and scorching sun and has protested us from it all. I bought it used from a fellow camper for $65 dollars and later bought the side curtains ($20.00 I think). That's about 17 dollars a year and if you look in my album you will see it in every camping gathering acting as kitchen , living room , changing room and potty enclosure. It is the first thing packed and the 1st thing up. YEP it's that important to us.
Growing older but not up !

I couldnt agree more! I used to sell at street fairs...it's amazing how little wind it takes to shred an easy up....and ours was a heavy duty industrial model....in the $1000 price range!!! The people around is faired just as bad with every other solution. Bobs tie downs re the minimum I'd use. And frankly, id probably remove the cloth if it looked like rain.

Be careful too, I've seen tie down to boat anchors and pipes filled with concrete....the just swing like some martial arts weapon....

Winds over a breeze and you'll look like Mary Poppins....

Be very careful with anything heavier than aluminum/fiberglass tent poles...
