Back to wanting a teardrop

Postby Phillyboi » Sat Mar 24, 2012 12:23 am

After being afflicted with a minor bout of common sense for a bit, I am back to the craziness of wanting to build a tear. I really LOVE the Aussie tears and would love to duplicate one of them. Just by looking, can anyone tell me what basic shape it is? It appears modernistic, but hard to tell. Also considering buying plans for the aero tear from great lakes. Finally, the one major sticking point in starting this project is the trouble everyone had had with repacking axels. Def don't wanna have to stop halfway to Florida with a can a grease in my hand. Can anyone help me without telling me to read the rest of the forum ( been there done that)

Kind of off point. It's not that I CAN'T repackage the bearings it's that I don't want to

Phillyboi
first: I was stationed in Philly naval base back in 1960 love the town great memories.
we have returned several time last time we were there was 2011.

Second: I have been pulling camping trailers for a lot of years packing bearings is a one time a year thing
I've pulled trailers from coast to coast and border to border never have I repacked the bearings while traveling there's just no need.
if you feel they need a squirt of grease now and then you can use the ones that has grease zerks and pump away, just for your peace of mind.

let the worry of packing wheel bearings be on the bottom of your list like I said one time a year kind of thing.

good luck on your build.

You can always get a bearing buddy and then all you have to do is squirt in some grease from a grease gun. Easy peasy..

I think "bearing buddy" is to keep water out of the bearing and are used on boat trailers and not to lube the bearings but I may be wrong.
I had a dexter axel with the e-z-lube fittings like the one herehttp://dexteraxle.com/i/u/6149609/f/product_flyers/E-Z-Lube_7-11.pdf

Yes, same thing.

Here's what I was referring to: http://www.etrailer.com/Grease-Caps/Pilot-Automotive/BC-190.html which etrailer.com calls bearing protectors.

I've seen others refer to them as bearing buddies, but I could be wrong.

Is your plan to start with a new axle and hubs or a used one? If it's a used set up, you're going to want to go through it anyway and check them out. Either way...you're going to have to do them right from the get go. I only look into mine every other year, but after a long haul, feel the hubs and check the temps on them. On a smaller wheel and hub, you may want to check more frequently and check for play in the hub.

Honestly, I think you're going to have many more challenges other than the bearings when you build one. IE a hatch and doors that seal up well. Done correctly, bearings won't be an issue with some maintenance. Doug

Here in utah there is a trailer place that will pack your bearings. iknow its a little out of your way but there may be a place around there that does that.

Yep ... EZ-Lube hubs ... been using them almost exclusively since they came out ... ... never had a problem. I've got Bearing Buddies on my sailboat trailer (520/8" tires) ... no problems with those, either, and I used to pull it at 70+ mph all the time (that I wasn't in CA ... ...).

Good luck, and as always ...

Hey everyone.

I appreciate the comments and the insight. Years ago, you used to be able to use a grease gun on the front hubs in your CAR (before FWD) but I had forgotten about them. As long as the races are ok, just a squirt of grease should work great. Thanks! I just didn't want to be trying to repack a bearing while sitting along Rt 95 in the shadows of "South of the Border!" (Is thatplace still around?) So its good to know that dust caps with grease fittings are still available.

So that gets is to what I want it to look like. I am in LOVE the look of the aussie tear - especially their "off-road" version. the "woodies" are nice, but something more "slick" with a nice skin is the look I am going for.

Can someone take a look and confirm for me the style he used. It looks like drawings of a "modified Mordernistic" teardrop, but just wanted to be sure.

Help?
