Question. Why did we ever think shag carpet was "cool"?

specially the orange stuff.

Because it came out before the avocado or harvest gold colors did....besides, it was easier to rake a rug rather than vacuum it. I have no room to comment on it all...38 years ago, I had a 51 Chevy panel and had the rear shag carpeted....funny thing...never got any action in it....go figgur'. As an adult...I'm pretty sure it was me....Doug

Yeah, now you need to show off your skills at the Dam!!!

How often does your team do these cookoffs? I should have gone there instead of the Safeway gas station today...just a bad day...

Give us the details..who you beat and how..what were the other dishes...all that stuff...

and no way was the carpet replaced in the Grasshopper...it's orange/rust sculptured shag. Ain't no way they found a nice piece of that later!!!

The cooking was not fun. We waited too long to start. Then it got crazy windy. The coal were throwing sparks in our eyes. They got to hot and burned the top of one of the cobblers. Then it rained cats and calfs. We had to move ALL of our stuff. Our competition was a meatloaf that did win best main dish. I never even got to taste it. Our sweet potato pie was the real hit and yes I will cook it for you at the dam.

I saw Three Dog Night at the Alameda Co. fair um...in the 90's sometime. Good stuff!!

Cobblers interest me. At a local pub Thurs. night my friend was eating an Ollaliberry (I know I spelled that wrong!) cobbler..not too sweet at all! Devonshire cream on top. I was trying to figure out how I could do that in the DO...

Hmm...cobbler. What kind did your team do again?? Whatever it was, I'm sure it was good, singed top or not!

Sweet potato pie?? Wow!! I've found the 'insert' pans to raise pizza and such off the bottom of the DO...may have to try apricot or something (we can our own apricot pie filling..and jam.)

Something to think about. I'm no cast iron chef like you, but I've made a few very tasty main dishes in the DO. May have to try some not too sweet sweets!!

Can I play, too?

I have a vintage find from today.

First let me confess. A couple of years back when my sister and I traveled cross country to tend to our fathers affairs and belongings, we had to be somewhat selective in what we decided to keep. If it didn't fit in the car it would have to be shipped and we found ourselves struggling not to want everything. Dad had an old (early 70's?) gas Coleman lantern that we had used on the original Poet Creek trip, green, think it may have been a two mantle (not sure, don't think it was anything too very old or special). There were two plain green Coleman propane lanterns with the plastic bases (one we remembered, the other must have been newer but was the same variety), and I seem to think that there was also a battery operated lantern. Well, at the time neither of us planned to do any camping and considering that they were fragile, we decided to let them go with the other belongings to be auctioned for the estate. I know, I know, sacrilege, but we were grieving, coping, and making decisions on the fly. I'm sure another Coleman hound snapped them up for a bargain, so it all worked out in the end, right?

It wasn't until during the car trip back to the east coast that we made the commitment to go camping in Idaho as a tribute to Dad (see more here). That led me to needing a way to haul camping gear, which lead me to this great website, after which I started poking around and occasionally looked in on you Coleman freaks (said with awe and the greatest respect).

I now realize the error I have made in letting Dad's burners go (we did keep all of the fishing gear, including literally thousands of hand tied flies, and vintage fly reels, much of his gun collection, and many of his hand tools...my sister kept the 14 foot tepee :o ). Oh, and I have had the family propane fired two burner tin camp stove suitcase, a Century Primus 4400 Streamliner II in brown and gold for a while now (I can get pic's if anyone is interested).

Anyway, by way of attempting to redeem myself, this evening on the way home from my build location, I stopped in at the Goodwill to see if they had any Coleman stuff. Didn't look too promising, so I asked the two kids stocking shelves if they ever get any camping equipment, gas lanterns or stoves, and they replied that they couldn't sell anything gas powered due to liability. Yeah, that's about what I had figured. Headed for the door.

Just as I was walking out, something in the jumble bin by the door caught my eye. Did a double take on some kind of AC/DC charger device; looked out dated. Oh well, headed out again...but wait...what was that little yellow box with the familiar logo, triple take.

And there it was. Tag had it at $0.79, paid $0.84 after tax.

The box top is missing three of the tabs and they put the price sticker smack dab in the center of the graphic, but the funnel is pristine and appears to be unused.

Score!

I know it's not much, but it is a start. I will try to be more alert to yard sales and flea markets, and I WILL score a lantern and gas stove before the big trip this summer. You will see. (I hope.)

The cobbler we made was a Apple Carmel with almond and brown sugar topping. It was good but one of them burnt on top because the wind was blowing like crazy. You have to be careful with carmel pellets - they can burn or get to hard crack stage, like hard candy. I found the batter recipe in a cooking magazine about 5 years ago. Its been winning ever since.

Sometimes our team cooks together and sometimes we break up and challenge each other. We have been cooking together since we were kids. The real chef on our team has a restaurant and he is Italian.

Sounds really good!!

I was thinking while driving to work (I get bored driving the automatic truck...)about the blackberries I have frozen. Then I 'remembered' that you can get all kinds of fresh berries at the store. I'm going to have to work up some sort of cobbler with berries..

good thing the weather is getting nice..I hope to have some energy left after working on the 'hopper to fire up the DO and bake up something good..starting with black forest cake.

Now I'm getting some great ideas for names..I just have to come up with great recipes to fit them!!

Caramel Apple...sounds like a great fall gathering food. Or something for Thanksgiving Camping...sounds great!!

You have a DO...get out and cook something!! Everything tastes better cooked in a DO! Even sleeves!! (I'm guessing..I stick with more traditional food...)

Hey, a new Dutchie. OK to season., Wash it very well in hot soap and water. Dry well. When cool coat the inside with a good Omega 3 oil, place in oven, upside down, turn oven on to 350 degrees, let it cook for 1 hour and turn oven off. Remove Dutchie when completely cool.Re- do the above procedure 1 more time and you should be good to go. BTW lots of great ideas, recipies etc on the web or lots of great books out there
Enjoy Jan
