Beefed Up HF trailer tongue, 4 x 4 trailer

Postby b.bodemer » Wed Apr 04, 2012 11:47 am

I went with BobHenry's suggestion to add a stronger and longer trailer tongue.

I replaced it with a 2 x 3 x 3/16 x 8'. The 8' length allows me to fasten the tongue to all 3 crossmembers.

Then I added a 2" coupler vs. the 1 7/8th that comes with the trailer.

Looks like you added a good 3' or more :applause:

These little 40 x 48 HF trailers can be stretched to 7' + by cantalivering the floor forward and back about 12 to 18 inches. If you have towed it and tried to back it up before and after, I know you saw a HUGH difference in it's road manners. Its good you went 2 x 3 my 2x2 replacement tongue on the barn had too much flex and required some trussing to strengthen it.

Thank Harvey ("Nobody") as I borrowed the idea from him !
Growing older but not up !
