Cabin fan question - not roof vent fan

Postby txcamper » Tue Apr 03, 2012 3:48 pm

I've searched but haven't yet located the details I'm looking for and I'm hoping someone can point me to the thread or answer.

What is the purpose of the cabin fan between the galley and cabin on some of the teardrop's I've seen online.

Is it just for air movement for comfort or is there a safety factor to it? Maybe moving air in a cold weather situation to keep CO2 out of the cabin?

I don't currently have a plan to install this fan (only roof vent fan) so I'm wondering how important it is for me to include one.

Thanks!

A picture would be helpful...

At first blush, I would think that it is similar to the box fan in the window concept that you might do at home.

When the hatch is open, you can create a nice breeze thru the teardrop by using a window fan thru the gallery bulkhead. Add a couple cold washcloths to the forehead or chest, and you might not even miss the air conditioner.

Anyways, I'll wait for the pictures...

Here are a couple examples, you can see the fans in the top of both of these galleys:

Are they to draw the scent of cooking bacon and eggs over the sleeping spouse in the morning? ;)

Maybe the builders didn't want to deal with the possible leaking issues from a roof mounted fan? Looks like a good place to put a fan if you didn't want any rain blowing or dripping in. I always close the hatch at night to keep the critters out so it wouldn't work for me.

Sounds like a personal choice situation to me. I think it's
a good idea if you want some kind of continuous air flow
in addition to any the roof vent would provide. I'd like a
couple of small adjustable wall mounted fans too inside
that would blow air on you if so desired - just a personal
preference.

Cheers,

When I first got interested in teardrops I looked a some at a dealer that had been made by the Amish in Ohio. I don't recall the brand, but they had the fans like your photos. They did not have a roof vent, but did have louvered vents on the sides of the galley. The elimination of the roof vent also eliminates any chances of leaks, plus it looks a little more streamlined in my opinion. With the setup I saw you can still have air circulation with the galley closed completely, and the chance of water damage with the louvered vents will be minimal. I considered this before I started my build, but I decided to go with the powered roof vent instead.

A few years back, I saw a trailer that had computer fans (might have been laptop cooler fans...don't know). It had the little fans in the back, between the galley and cabin and also in the front of the cabin. The builder said that, with one set on exhaust and the other, on intake, it pulled air through the cabin,. He said that the system worked very well!

I like the bacon and eggs theory!

Thanks for the feedback, and very interesting about the puller/pusher idea to bring air through the cabin.

When I travel to national parks I always close my kitchen to keep animals out. We have a fantastic fan with varible speed control on the roof and it works great. We have never had an issuse with the vent/fan on top the roof leaking. I also like that the roof vent opens for more air flow because our windows are not very big and don't open very wide.

I think by eliminating the roof top vent you can build your trailer taller and still have it garagable
