KampKook model 3 now finished...on page 2

Postby doug hodder » Sun Apr 01, 2012 12:26 am

I was working at the store today and got a phone call, I was whacking some fabric for a customer when they called. It was from my "secret pickers", beating the highways and byways of the Southwest during the winter. I was thrilled to hear that they found me a nice 2C Coleman. That's the one with the oven (circa late 20's). In addition, previously they picked up a 2D...that's without the oven. I got a matched pair now.

It's gonna be like Christmas at the Dam for me, pick up 2 stoves! Jeremy also turned me on to a KampKook model 3 up at the Pacific NW. Coleman gathering. It's here in central Ca. right now...I get it next Friday. My plan is to haul the KampKook 57 into the store and show it to the guy delivering the 3. He's the one that originally had it prior to it's restoration. Hope he likes how it turned out.

Glad to get some stock to fill the pipeline of items to be restored! I haven't been in the shop for 3 weeks...which is a drag as I bought up a load of firewood for the shop and this summers camping trips, plus the Nomad is ready for some shop camping! It's snowing here tonight.

I still gotta cook up an idea for display shelves/cabinets....as the museum is growing. Fortunately....the upstairs has lots of room and no one to bug me about what's up there. I'm building a "man cave". Doug

Thats great Doug. I noticed today that there is a model 1 on ebay. It looks to be complete.

Kirk....I dropped the dough and bought my #1 on e-bay. I really took a chance on it. What I find is that most of these things are pretty restorable, unless someone has really torn into in or done some serious damage to it. Something like a model 1 can be a tough find in the wild. The worse it appears on e-bay, the better chance you have on it as a lot of people are afraid to get in over their heads on them. I'd like to pick up a duplicate of one that I already have and restore it. Then put it up on e-bay with a full resto and see what the market will bear on it. The older the better.

My "pickers" came by today on their way home from their winter vacation. This 2C is really complete, got the oven shelf, and the diffuser heat shield for it. It also has the cast iron grate, and most only had the wire grates. It may be a fairly uncommon stove. Doug

I also got this the other day. It's a model 3 KampKook. Rainjer found this for me up in Wa. while at the PNW Coleman thing. A Coleman member brought it down for me....plenty of rust on this one! This is probably the smallest 2 burner around, it measures 14.5 x 8 x 3.5". I'll need to get a pic of it next to a typical Coleman for some reference. Legs and wind wings are rusted up pretty solid. A real challenge. Thanks go out to Rainjer and John (Kato)... Doug

Great finds Doug. There will be people lined up to be a docent at the much revered Snoop Doug Museum.

After 24 hours in a citric acid bath, the #3 came apart. What a rust bucket! Here's a pic with a typical claw hammer in it for size. This stove is really small. From what I've seen when it cleaned up....someone seriously overheated this thing...it was scorched all over the place. Just a couple of small patches of original paint were left. The generator on the fuel tank isn't much larger than a Coleman 220. Now for a light bead blast and some body work on it. It's got some bends.

Wow! That is a small stove!! But it looks like you'll be able to restore it to almost perfect condition! Can't wait for a report on the body work segment!

This one is going to really take some time to smooth out all the pits in it, probably some spot putty rather than just primer sanded. I'll have to wait till I do the blast on it to really know what I've got to work with. Even the iron manifold is really pitted in places, especially where it was attached to the box...it spent some time sitting in water.

What's nice is that a lot of the manufacturers used a coating on the tanks so they don't get as bad as the rest of the stove. Coleman had an "everdur" or "soladur"...which I believe to be sort of a tin/lead coating, I'm sure that other manufacturers did a similar treatment, but didn't market it as heavily as Coleman did. I'm still learning a lot of that stuff. Usually on a tank, regardless of the manufacturer, the paint strips readily and there is not much rust on any of the older tank exteriors that I've done.

I've been on the phone with Jeremy this evening about a new T design....it'll be killer. Can't wait to get it printed. Doug

Nice project You will do justice for it :applause:
Is there anytime where restoring is frowned upon because of losing value or natural patina ?
I know in this case this one has mostly grime and water damage. and do you use a paint spraying equipment or cans of paint?

A nice fairly unused stove with good paint maybe shouldn't be restored, especially on an old one maybe with paperwork. I see no problem in what I do since most are non-working and rusted up. There's no real value in it at that point. These aren't Chippendale pieces of furniture...you won't get rich sitting on a good condition old stove. I get much more enjoyment out of doing a restoration on a 15$ stove rather than sitting on it for 20 years and hope it'll double in value.

I do spray with a gun and compressor. I've done plenty of rattle can paint jobs on lanterns though. Doug

Doug do you use high heat paint on the oven part of old stoves. On sunday I was seasoning some dutch ovens in an old bbq I use for that and I noticed it was getting hotter in there than I thought. It seems most regular paint can do pretty well up to about 180-200 degrees. Those ovens could go to 500 I am sure.

I've sprayed the ovens with engine block paint. I've also run them up to the 500F. They smoke a bit on the first firing, but after that they have been fine. Engine block paint kinda gives you some gloss, but it's not the same as a catalyzed paint. Doug
