Homebuilt 'bent #2: Katü

After a too long hiatus while waiting for funds, my second homebuilt recumbent is ready for test riding. I've named it Katü as a bit of a play on words. My first homebuilt was called Kranky both for the fact that it had two cranksets, and because the rear triangle that inspired the design was left by the dumpster at work by the local meth (also known as Krank) addicts. Katü is the second bike using that dual bottom bracket design, and I thought I should keep with the "K" naming scheme. It's also so tall it's like being up in the Himalayas :)

Very Nice! I like it. With it being tall like that you don't have to worry about the people in cars seeing you when they drive up next to you like I do on this. I am well below there door handles .

I know what you mean. I seem to be going higher with every new bike. First the trike like yours, then a 24/20 SWB, now a dual 26. What's next a recumbent version of those hipster tall bikes?

The really fastest bents are all built with dual 700 wheels these days.

That's a really nice bike. I applaud your efforts.

Very nice looking Bent. Great job. How about a rundown on the components used? Gearing, brakes, hubs and the likes for us other bike nuts.

That's quite a list Jim, let's see now...

Avid BB-7 disks with Speed Dial levers
Mavic 819 26" wheels with Deore XT hubs and Kenda Kwest tires
Sram X9 10 speed all around; TT 550 shifters, PG 1050 11-32 cassette, ans 3 KMC chains
Jagwire ripcord cables and housings
Bachetta Euromesh seat and tweener bars
Cane creek S3 headset, and Burley folding stem
2 Sram GXP bottom brackets, with a Truvativ tandem crankset, and Bushnell eccentric.

I think that about covers it :?

Actually I don't own any recumbents... although the Greenspeed tandem trike has been on my list. A friend did have one of the 700c ones, but I don't remember what kind it was.

700c SWB recumbents are indeed becoming very popular, though few use the 'stick' design (long straight tube) because of the high CG. I have two, a front wheel drive (AKA moving bottom bracket - MBB) Cruzbike Silvio

Ooh, a Metaphysic, now that's a sweet looking bike. The new Challenge is intriguing too.
Now that I have a few km on Katu, I'm getting used to the feeling of being way up in the air, and am starting to really enjoy my new build. I think it's a keeper.
