Hi Tom,
1) The 5x8 is perfect... you would probably build on top of the frame, rather than hiding the frame.
2) The 1x2 are meant to be laid down. They are there the give your screws something to screw into... Many people use 2x2 instead of 1x2. Either way is fine.

Well, I'll add a paragraph for that... in the meantime, the roof goes on the same way as the hatch skin (see page 59). But you could also use tie straps to glue your roof on... Thanks for catching this!
4) Currently the wires are run underneath the trailer, alongside the frame. I've also seen the wires run inside the 2x2 tubing. What do you have in mind?
