Best Design for a Tall Person

Postby Freddy the Element » Sun Apr 15, 2012 1:51 am

So I've been shopping around and running into various roadblocks (too far, too expensive, too small, too long, too heavy, etc.) and it's dawning on me that if I want a teardrop, I'm probably going to need to build one myself.

I'm 6'6" and the standard 78" mattress is just not going to cut it for me -- I need 84". A 5'x10' layout would work well with my storage limitations, so, can anyone recommend a particular style (Benroy, Grumman, Kenskill, etc.) that would work best for my height? I'm guessing a Kenskill or Grumman with just much shorter cabinets in the galley -- does that sound right?

Thanks for any insight!

How about a Grasshopper? Our 6X10 accommodates my 6'3" with ease and by moving the interior cabinet that houses the water tank a bit further back an additional what ever inches could be achieved with out sacrificing in the galley.

I would select the Benroy style.

It would give you the maximum floor length with it's front and back starting off vertical.

Yep ... I'd suggest the Benroy, as well! Besides, that profile would look great behind your Element ... :D ...!

BTW ... you wouldn't have to go to a full 10' length ... maybe 9' ... I'm 6'4" and I have an 82" long mattress in a 4x8 trailer where the only "loss" of cabinet space is under the counter. Just something else to think about ... ...! Good luck, and as always ...

Cass...... I to am 6'6' I built a 5'x8' Benroy. Mine has a queen size mattress in it an unlike a normal bed I find it is just right. I don't quite know why but the queen mattress works for me. It might be because you are in a box and the pillows don't fall off the bed or some unknown tear drop forces at work that actually shrink you when you crawl through the door. But it is plenty big enough for me. The storage space under the counter in the galley is smaller but I found this skinner cooler from igloo that worked. http://www.igloocoolers.com/Coolers_3/Personal-Size/24-Can-Legend

Not familiar with it -- I'll look through your gallery and see what you have. I have never seen a teardrop listed for sale with that name -- who makes/made them?

Thanks.

Thank you -- sounds like the Benroy is the winner, and it helps to hear from a professional builder on the subject -- I'll look into it! I guess the only downside to the Benroy is that the galley hatch doesn't stick out as far for shelter, is that right?

And I do agree it would complement my Element very well!
