Annealing t-molding?

Postby Duckfenderly1 » Tue Apr 17, 2012 11:07 pm

Im at a loss on how to bend the t-molding for my door! Ive read about annealing the molding but never have done it before. Do you try to bend it by hand after putting the heat to it? Is it a smooth bend afterwards or does it look like a ocean and have to put a ton of screws to make it lay down? Sorry just rambling im just lost on this :x :( :? . Thanks for any help Joe

Hello Joe: Most, if not all T molding you get to go around the doors is already annealed when you get it. Mine was annealed and it bent very easy for me. Just start at one corner of the door and screw it down and bend it by hand as you go. On the tighter curves the T molding will pucker up leaving ripples as you go. Don't worry about this until you get the T moulding installed completely around the door. After you have it installed, take a rubber faced hammer and use it to bend the moulding down flat where it is puckered up. It may take a while to get it flat. Just take your time with it and work the ripples out of it.
I hope this helps you... ;)

If you've read the annealing process here it is to soot it up, then heat it up to burn the soot off. When it cools it will be softer, you don't handle it hot. I managed to bend mine fine, I think it was a 1inX1in T, but it was a pretty gradual arc.
