Gas price=Motor bike purchase

Postby southpennrailroad » Tue Apr 10, 2012 8:32 pm

I have a Chevy Colorado and it gets about 15 mpg and using it for work is costing me a lot. I have lately been thinking about a motor bike (150 CC) I think the savings will be of great help. Sometimes my boss sends me out just to do measures and that only nets me $5.00 a piece of glass measured. $20.00 tops for fours pieces of measured glass. I don't buy something unless it is possible to use it for more then one reason. So I also think of using it for my railroad research and days off will help in the reason for it's purchase. Also to take trips to Harrisburg and back on day trips to the Archives will help in costs. Right now the only reason I don't go anywhere is because of the cost of fuel. I hate being stuck in the trailer so I plan on getting the bike. It's suppose to get 65 mpg plus. Cost $1,600.

Also the bike can be used to get me around camp grounds as well and over the mountain roads and along the turnpike and even onto the railroad grades as well. I will just use the truck to get the trailer to the camp sites and leave the truck with the trailer and take the bike.

I know better then use it on the pike and I ride alongside on the back roads as that is where my hobby takes me, not on the pike. :) Note I mention alongside the pike and not directly on it. But trust me it will save on fuel. I need that.

You might want to look @ Honda 250 Nighthawks..

Dirt cheap and reliable.. No bells or whistles, even uses 1 carburetor for both cylinders. Get around 80 MPG and are Turnpike legal (barely). A good used one goes for around $1000.

I'm partial to the Genuine Buddy 150 scooter. 65 mph and 80 miles per gallon. This is mine. I call her Sophia.

Lots of storage under the seat.

Thanks but I only travel the pike when I am hooked up to the trailer to get to the camping site. Then it is all roads along side the pike.

I can absolutely understand your frustration with gas prices, but you need to sit down with a calculator before you do this.

If you drive around the average 15,000 miles a year, four dollar a gallon gas puts you spending about eighty dollars a week in gas. If you can use that scooter for half of your driving, you can knock off 30 bucks a week in fuel cost. For a 1600 dollar purchase, that means you break even in a little over a year.

Me, I won't trade $30 a week for being that exposed and that slow getting where I am going. I'd skip some fast food, walk to the store a few times a month or something similar first.

I've never seen a scooter come anywhere close to highway speeds. 30mph is what I see. I can't imagine how long it would take and under what conditions you can get a 150cc engine up to 65 mph.

Unless you're really brave, Winter conditions might stretch the payback time to 2 years...
Add insurance, maintenance, tires, safety clothing/helmet if you care, and payback time is much longer.

That said, they are fun! Image You just don't save that much money.
If someone worked a mile or two away from home, and lived in a nice climate (year round riding) and sold their car and just used a bike, you would save a lot.

Before you run out and buy your scooter, consider these: http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16425

I like the option of being to get on the highway if needed. I had a Honda many many years ago, and it was fine on the highway.
