I spent 3 nights and days at Cascade Locks, OR. I went to Trail Skills College. It is put on by various hiking trail maintenance groups to teach volunteers skills like cutting out logs using a crosscut saw.
Cascade Locks has a small campground. The Columbia River is beyond my teardrop. The hills in the background are in Warshington State. The area is an historic site. Before Bonneville Dam was constructed, there were treacherous rapids here. I believe I read where steamboats would run them at high water, but there were a few wrecks. Most folks ended up portaging around the falls. Two locks were constructed in the 1800s to allow boats to navigate around the rapids.
You can see The Bridge Of The Gods, which I should have taken a picture of, from the area. It is a narrow old toll bridge with that mesh stuff for surfacing. The speed limit is 15mph on it.
The campground has showers and restrooms. The campsites are located about 30 or 40 feet from the railroad. Trains go by all through the night and some pull over onto a siding right there. Trains are also traveling across the river so it isn't a quiet and peaceful area. However, since I live out in the sticks where amusement is what you make, I could see myself setting up a lawnchair with beverages, and watching barges go by on the river, and trains going by on the land side.
The weather was downpourish on Thursday when I pulled in, drizzly on Friday, and then it was a heatwave--80s on Saturday and Sunday. What you can't see in the picture is the caked on pollen. I depollenized the Little Guy yesterday.
