CAUTION: Spam/Phishing e-mails from Amazon

Postby Verna » Thu May 03, 2012 6:04 pm

Watch out for Spam or Phishing e-mails that appear to be from Amazon.

I've ordered quite a few things lately from Amazon, and I received an e-mail within the past hour that said that an order for a book that I ordered "tomorrow" (yes, it used tomorrow's date) has been canceled. Hummm....I haven't ordered any books, so I looked up the title and author on Amazon, using another browser window. It's not even a legitimate title by that author.

On my account on Amazon (still using another browser window), I checked for recent orders and this order was not there. And, the order number was not formatted the same way that Amazon uses. I imagine that if I had clicked on the invalid order number which was highlighted as a link would be, I would have been subjected to spam, virus, trojan--whatever the author of the e-mail wanted to torture people with. I'm sure the Amazon link was probably a link to somewhere else, also.

So, per instructions on Amazon, I copied and pasted the subject line and the e-mail and e-mailed it to the real Amazon.

Strange how we have to be careful even when the e-mail looked so official.....although come to think of it....the e-mail did NOT have Amazon's logo on it.

Be careful!!

I think it's sad that there are people who think this behavior is okay. "because I can" is no excuse.
