Hello,
I just joined this form so I thought I would say hello. first things first. My name is Jimmy and I live in a little town (Village) called Norwalk in Wisconsin. How I found this form. There were allot of web sites about tear drop builds that had links to it. So I figured it was the one to join so I did. So here is how the story started about two years ago I bought a trailer build from a old 1957 pick up truck bed with the pick up box on it for about 100 dollars. It had good leaf springs and shocks and had the same size tires on it as my van (I had heard that it was better if your trailer had the same size tires on it as the car/van/truck used to pull them.) It had a good enough floor, and a cargo type box built into the front. So I buy it. lights worked good and all so I pulled her home. Pulled really nice. Get home and I find the first problem. the tongue e is to short so its a bear to back up to anything. No worries! there is a wheel on the front and a leg to hold the tongue up and push it easy. (so I thought). It was heavy as sin. The cargo box is made of diamond plate. So I get her pushed back to the spot I had arranged for the trailer to be parked on a old cement slab next to my garage. Once you got her rolling however pushed easy.
So I used her to hall scrap whatever you know. that's why someone buys a trailer. I should state here that I could get around great when I bought her however that has changed I now walk with a walker when I walk and use a wheel chair (problems with my c4 & c5) among other things. So I get the idea of removing the pick up box and sell it for scrap it was a pain but it finely came off. I replaced the old floor at this time and scrap the box for what I got for it and a few other things I now have a 75 dollar flatbed trailer with a cargo box. Still heavy as sin it's the cargo box its a heavy bugger.
Like I said I now have problems walking and the like so I do a disabled deer hunt. camping at deer camp in a tent is not fun for someone who has the problems I do. So I am thinking I need a camper. I am on disability so I cant find on I can afford So I start thinking build one use the trailer so I start looking things up on the net. I learn about these really cool little campers called tear drop campers. I more I look the more I like. So I go outside and measure the bed of the trailer is 6 feet across by 8 foot long. I figure I can get two more feet so the bed comes out to 10 feet long by 6 feet across, yep it will work to build one of this tear drops. Man is got then bug 15 inch tires on it holy cow! it looks really high. and Keep in mind I never lengthened the tongue I know there is math to figure it out by just have not as of yet. The other problem is the bed is so High.
So I am thinking ok it will just be high. these little tear drops are custom to start with so hay! I can work with that. So here I am posting this hello to the form.
First thing is getting the trailer lower. short of going with smaller tires providing and can match the bolt pattern is the only thing I can thing of, Suggestions here more than welcome. I am planning on posting pictures of the trailer. I just want to get the scrap unloaded that is on here now before I do. I should be doing that Monday. I got some really good ideas form pictures here on the form and other websites. I see there are also free planes on line so that’s a plus for me. The Disabled deer hunt I do is in OCT. So hopefully I can get her done in time to use her this year. If not totally done then enough to sleep in come deer hunting works for me. Any way just wanted to say Hi. This should be a fun project and I have more time than money so it will give me a way to stay active.
Peace
Jimmy c
