Hello from Tampa

Postby C3Cole » Thu May 10, 2012 4:38 pm

Hello all:

Thanks to everyone here for the great information provided, and Mike for the site. I am slowly working towards building a teardrop in a plagiarized hybrid of the general Benroy and a Grumman 2. I plan to build a 1" square 1/8 wall aluminum skeleton, cover with .040 aluminum, insulate with foam to 1.5" wall thickness, and cover the foam with (probably cloth), similar to the headliner in a car. Here is a sketchup pic of the idea (special thanks to Danlott71 for his youtube sketchup guide).

Am I way off in my desire?

I hope everyone is having a great day,

Welcome to the Forum.
I take it you can aluminum weld and are a fabricator??
Sounds like a great project!
Hope you have as much fun creating yours as I did mine.
Got to start my wiring today.
Love it.

The journey is the reward.

I like to "think" that I can build whatever I want. I have done some home/personal welding for over 35 years. I have a 220v mig welder, and next week will have a spool gun with which to weld the aluminum tubing. Haven't done it yet, but that is what making things is about. I have a metal bandsaw, 13x40 metal lathe, drill press, gas welding setup, and so on.

I'll get my spoolgun and some aluminum to practice on first, and as a back up plan, I can switch to stainless tube ($$).

Thanks for your thoughts,

Cole

Great looking Bar-B-Q.
You will have no problem with your teardrop build.

Vedette: Thank you for the kind comment. I am jealous of your truck.

My smoker is quite useful. 2-3x a year, we smoke about 100-150 pounds of meat, cut it into 2 person meal portions, and vacuum pack freeze them. Then we just pull out a freezer pack, microwave it, and have delicious smoked meat for dinner. I usually do 6-8 pork butts, 2-4 pork loins, 2-3 whole turkeys, some sausage, brisket, red peppers, onions, and ????

Good day all,

My mouth is watering just looking at that plate.
Wish we were coming that far south this year, as we would love to stop by for a taste.
