Hello From North Dallas

Postby ZippyTheTurtle » Tue May 15, 2012 12:25 am

I have been trying to talk the wife into purchasing a new popup for years.
Then I gave up on the new popup purchase and recenty started dreaming about a used Airstream.
Maybe a fixer upper.
Once I saw the towing weight on some of the Airstreams even gutting one and doing a light build inside seemed expensive, daunting, and did I mention expensive to tow?
Then I found a youtube of some guy with his Camp-Inn 560 which led to Little Guy in the comments section. They looked kind of neat. 8)
So I called up the local dealer and he explained he was just walking out but I could see them on the lot. So I drove out to Paris, Texas Saturday night (4 hour round trip) with a buddy to check them out. Took lots of pictures. :pictures:
Then I started thinking again. Which is always dangerous. I thought surely you could add some custom stuff to these or just build them yourself.
That is how I ended up dazed, confused and sleepless on your site. :?
I feel like I've found the internet all over again. I'm overwhelmed with info. Great forum you have here. :applause:
I'm feeling a little bit inadequate with my woodcrafting skills but figure I can make something simple to get me in the game and continue improving. :NC

I've got some time to think as I clean out my garage. I'm trying to decide if I want to try to salvage a frame or buy new. If I buy new get a bolt kit or prewelded? I have a friend who welds but I haven't seen enough of his work to decide if I want to bet my butt or the heads of those behind me on the highway on his skill level. I would be okay with the room in the TD for sleeping and sitting out storms and I would like to have room for the optional dog bed should we decide he can behave himself at the camp. I'm thinking perhaps a grasshopper as they look easy and perhaps a little more room in the sleep section can be easily accomodated. I have a bit more reading, planning, scheming, dreaming and garage cleaning to do. Thanks for putting this forum together. It appears to be a great gang of folks. I can't wait to get out and meet some of you. I'll have to bring the tent for a while.

Welcome to the Forum.
How about a "Modernistic"? This will really mess with you head.
Try the search feature here on the Forum.
Personally, I am just completing my build, and althought it has been a ton of fun??? It has also cost me a ton of money (time is money).
I would go out and buy a 5' Little Guy and let the camping begin.
Check ebay.
Don't worry about how far away it might be....just drive out and get it and camp you way back.

Welcome Zippy! There are a bunch of us teardroppers in the DFW area, especially north Dallas. We can help you whittle your own if you go that route. If you haven't already please check out the South Central section for area gatherings.

Take care,
Tom

Do you guys have any regular group outings other than the camp-outs? I would love to see your trailers and pick your brains. Find out which parts work or don't work and why? I am still debating building or buying.

I'm searching Craigslist all over the U.S. using Craigspal. Found a nice size 6' Little Guy in Maine for $2900 with an ATV cage on the front. Figure that would be great for tables, generator, ice chest(s), EZ-UP, porta potty, etc. or dare I say it? An ATV. No powered fan in the vent and no A/C. I think that would be rough in Texas or limit my camping season a bit but I could always get the after market A/C. If anyone is in the area this looks like a steal on a wide Little Guy.

It's pretty much established fact that if I camp in my tent I'm camping alone or with the dog. My wife does not want any part of "roughing it" so to speak. I thought popup camper but like tents I can imagine my cattle dog catching the scent or sound of a bunny at 3AM and bounding through the screen yodel yelping all the way. Airstreams are great and if you're handy you can pick up an old one and blow a wad of money restoring it. I would like to test my DIY out a bit before I take on such a challenge to learn more economical ways of doing simple trailer repairs and fabrication. I can't see buying a new Airstream. They are as proud of their product as I am of my bank statement. Besides with gas prices I figure towing something well beneath my tow vehicle capacity is much better than chugging along toting a boat anchor behind me that makes my 4Runner less fuel efficient than just buying the $6500 motor home on eBay that gets less than 10 MPG.

Having owned a Jeep Wrangler previously and gotten my radio stolen multiple times and the console busted into once I believe in some security. If you own a Jeep I would highly recommend getting a steel locking center console. Never had a problem after that purchase of powder-coated steel greatness.

Nobody wants to be the three legged antelope when the lion comes along to cull the herd.

Well I've got to get back to the bathroom and prove why I took a sick day from work. :(

Zippy,

As we are entering the hot season, they're not any regular outings or gatherings until the fall. The next good size get-together will be at Loyd Park near Joe Pool Lake in September. Don't let that slow you down. I think I'm safe in saying that you can PM most of the folks in the South Central section that live in the DFW area and we would be happy to show you our teardrops.

Take care,
Tom
