Great find guys. The 242 needs a stud on top and the ball nut. The 242 I got was the same way as yours. DavidA sent me the needed stud and I finally found the ball nut on the bay for $4. Gotta love the 242s specially the nickel founts. Mines painted. Boo hoo.

Debbie - Your lantern marked 3-3 I believe is a 220BX or 220C from March 1943. Is the bottom stamped US and if you have a magnet is the direction disc steel? If so it's a BX. Nice group of lanterns.

I messed with my Mil specs today and got the last one running. Well. one other runs but now it seems to be running rich. It worked good on a camping trip in Feb. then a week after I got home it started to run slightly rich. Changed gennie and still doing it. The other one I got running today I could easily see it had been running rich so I pulled the burner frame off and yes could see a spidy web in it. Blew it our. Did you know one of those tubes is used? The other is not opened up, there is a brass or something plug there. I will now have to take the other burner frame off and check to see if a spider decided to make a home. Lately I have had several mantles I have put on fall off. So today I put on 3 mantels and made sure they where tied nice and tight. One has fallen off already.

While out thrifting with my daughter I found a Coleman 425B. $7. Everything seems to be there, including fuel in the tank. I will probably set it aside for the moment and get the garage cleaned up, before I start making stove parts everywhere. It needs cleaned. All the old stickers are on it, so I probably won't paint it. I couldn't find a date, but did see a sticker that instructed how to lower the legs that has the following on it: 1950-624. If that's the manufacture date, this thing is older than I am. No pics tonight. Maybe when I cook on it the first time.

AS I mentioned earlier I worked on my Mil Spec lanterns today. Here is a couple of pics.





Front row, left to right. a 1981 or 80 SMP, an A 1946 530 with container and olive drab sack. Not a real Mil Spec but close enough. And a 1967 Coleman. Back row setting on the Medical stove. 1957 Coleman 252, non quadrant lantern, now has a new 220 globe in it, am keeping the US globe in a safe undisclosed location. And a 1981 or 80 SMP. I got the Med stove about a month ago and fired it up for the first time today. Also had 3 mil spec lanterns going at the same time. Sounded like buzz bombs over London in the shop. I can find no date on the med stove. Don't know if they are dated.

Ya know Darren, I think you're right. check out the burner caps, looks to be ceramic. If the fount is steel, it's definitely a BX.

I can't get my fingers to tie the knot with the short strings any more.
I switched to the spring clip

I have the same issue...I pre-tie the first portion of the knot before I put it on the burner. That way, it's just open the sock and pull the strings. Doug

I didn't know what those were either a year or so ago.

The direction disc is where you turn on the gas and the burner caps is where the mantles attach. The BX was made during the war effort so a lot of the normally brass parts were made from steel. The ceramic burner caps are getting hard to find.
