Postby Forrest747 » Sat May 19, 2012 11:48 am

I have a 1997 jeep wrangler TJ sport as the tow vehicle. On the way down i am having issues. changing gears is difficult if almost impossible and when i press teh clutch in i get a squealing noise. i also have a difficult time getting it into gear from a stop. thinking throwout bearing am i off? Runs quiet when i am driving.

I do klnow how to double clutch. The issue is I can't even get it into first Gear. Think I am doomed. Going to leave the trailer down here get the clutch fixed and then come back for it next. Week

I had a VW Baja Bug with a transporter rear end (reduction gears) that car would go through clutch cables (till i discovered you did NOT want the Brazilian made ones) and it got so I carried a spare. But there were a couple of occasions before I started carrying the spare where I would get it into first gear and start the car and you could crash it into higher gears and when you wanted to stop turn off the engine and crash it into first then start it when you wanted to move.

Check throwout bearing, pressure plate surface, and pilot bearing in transmission for the noise.
For hard shifting, it could be the throwout bearing causing poor clutch operation, but first check fluid level in the clutch master cylinder, assuming you have a hydraulic clutch.

If it is noisy when depressed and quiet when released, it is the T/O bearing

You can shift gears without using your clutch if you are careful. I was headed to West Tennessee pulling our little tear and got about 30 or 40 miles from the camp ground and my clutch hydraulic went down. I have a 90 Toyota 6 cylinder 4X4, when we had to stop I would put the truck in neutral, turn off the engine and put in 1st gear, crank the truck, accelerate. To put the truck in second, and the remaining gears, just hold pressure against the shifter, while letting off the gas and it will drop into gear by itself. To down shift, when going to a lower gear, put the truck in neutral and rev the engine up, (you have to be rolling, this won't work from a stand still) when the transmission and engine are at the same RPM it will slip into the lower gear. I always revved the engine up pretty good then let the RPMs drop, that is usually when it will slide into gear. Just don't put enough pressure that the gears grind, just a moderate pressure is all you need.
I started out with nothing and I still got plenty left.

Well its at my mechanic and he played with it and it might be one of the clutch finger. He will have it apart tomorrow and let me know. Taking it too him stop in traffic on the highway and couldn't get it into first. So many people telling me their number one.
