Go wider?

Is there an advantage to have an axle wider than the trailer compared to one that makes the wheels under the trailer.

I understand that it helps getting the teailer lower, but is there an advantage as far as towing, ride quality etc?

If the wheels are tucked under the trailer, then you either have to deal with wheel wells inside of your sleeping area, or build it so that your sleeping area is raised above the wheel wells so you can have a flat area to sleep on.

My first build had the wheels outside of the trailer. I built my current trailer over top of the wheels.

I understand that.

I'm more interrested into the ride carateristics of the trailer.

Doesnt make a difference as far as ride quality or handling is concerned.

Hi,

If the body width is the same, having the wheels outside the body will offer more stability.
If the body will be wider with the wheels under it, it can be harder to see around in your mirrors if your tow vehicle is smaller.
Though a drop axle is usually used with the wheels outside the body to offer a wheel well free bed area, it can be used when the body covers the wheels, but does take away from bed space.

Handling is always better when the center of gravity is lower, and the wheel track farther apart, but at normal highway speeds with small trailers the difference isn't enough to worry about.

Ride quality is all about the proper tires, springs, and weight distribution.

Thanks for the replies,

I asked the question beacause mon old trailer has vy small wheels under it and a weird pull shock suspension system(see wawaron thread in canned ham). I cannot find anything to make the suspension work properly so i'm thinking of rebuilding frame reinfrocement and going with another style of suspension with wheels outside the trailer bigger wheels without making it too high.

Should work.
