resizing clip art

Postby droid_ca » Sun May 27, 2012 10:23 am

I'm trying to make a logo. I have a large image that I'm kinda satisfied with and was wondering what would be the best format to save it in. I have heard vector jpg bitmap and a few other,s just don't remember off the top of my head at the moment. I don't want it to get all grainy when I reduce or enlarge it. I know there are some people on here that do this sort of thing for other crafts and art type projects. So maybe somebody can help me out
Hope fully this is useful for others who want to put a design on their trailer
Thanks again

If it is a JPEG or GIF now, you won't be able to save it as a vector file (which will enlarge smoothly). Only Illustrator and similar applications can handle vector files, Photoshop and the like are strictly bit map file programs.

All bitmap files will get "the jaggies" as they are enlarged. To what extent depends on the software you are using.

can you recommend a good program that would convert to vector format (preferably free)

There are programs that will auto trace into a vector format, some free web sites also. I have best results with an image that's at least 10 inches wide and at least 300 dpi. Solid colors work best and a true 1 bit, black and white image is the best. Post a link or PM me the logo and I'll see what I can do with it.

You can't "convert" a bit map into a vector, you have to trace or extract it. Illustrator and Designer have great tools for such, but neither is free, or even cheap.

For a one-time, your best bet is to find someone to trace it for you.

You can convert a bitmap to a vector. Illustrator and CorelDraw both have that ability. I use the feature often in my work.

I usually can come up with ideas for logos and what not, but they never really go anywhere, and now this one is going somewhere. I cant think of squat. I need a border trim for the logo, that I have presently, but not sure if it should be a square or a circle or any other basic shape. We are going to be getting patches made up to be sewn onto vests and dog harnesses as well as decorating my pickup. I'll upload a copy of it tomorrow and see what you guys think. Heck still working on a name for our group. We deel with search and rescue dogs as well as therapeutic dogs and I'm presently going to be doing a breeding program for the police and the military. We would like a name that doesn't narrow our fields too much as we would like to have room for expansion as our group begins to grow... Thank for any input
