Pretty warm over here today Slow.

Low humidity is better. High humidity can make it blush, turn milky. Or so is my understanding of it.

A disastrous epoxy day

Postby nevadatear » Mon May 28, 2012 9:58 pm

Slow I did all my epoxy in about 50 degrees. I did it in march. I was inside a big big workshop. We would heat it up with a propane torpedo heater, keep it on during a coat, and keep it on for an hour or so after. It was a slower cure but it did work. I used raka epoxy and like it a lot. I also made sure (after learned the hard way) to warm up the epoxy. It flowed much better that way. And I am in northern nv. Also no humidity.

A disastrous epoxy day

Warm it before you mix it. I took it home and kept in the house for a while. Sometimes setting the bottles on the warm woodstove hearth (a good piece away from the stove of course).

You can put the bottles in a tub of heated water to warm them up.

Slow, all of the shops I've worked in have had a cabinet with a 60W light bulb for storing epoxies.
Epoxy will still cure in cooler temps, it just takes a lot longer. Do you have the option of a tent and a heater (even a couple halogen worklights will do the trick).
I assume the lures and the box are small enough to be done indoors?

Where I used to work, we had a 'hot box' for storing stuff that was about to be used. An old broken-down refrigerator made an excellent cabinet, then the 60watt bulb and, to be really fancy, a thermostat - even old refrigerator insulation is good enough that a 60w bulb can get it too hot!

Slow, you can keep your epoxy in the warming cabinet you keep your welding rod in. You don't have a welding rod warming cabinet? Neither do I

Slow, whatever you do, do not set your can of epoxy and/or hardener directly on any of your stoves, or even directly in front of it for that matter. The stuff will heat up and expand and if it can find a way to ooze out (like through the pumps if you're using them, or loose caps), you will have one ungodly mess on your hands. Ask me how I know this???? :frightened:

I bet it looks something like the one above my washer/dryer.

Becky when I was fiberglassing my airplane we used squeegees and very small rollers
remember epoxy only adds weight once the cloth is wetted, but you already knew that didn't you?

I was in your neck of the woods last weekend (wed-sun) inner harbor
we had fun

I know about the weight, Pete. It will only get as much epoxy as is necessary to get a smooth surface, and not an ounce more!! I don't like the cloth weave showing through paint though, so I have to get it fair whatever that takes.

Since you were at the Inner Harbor all weekend, did you go to the Summer Blast at Pier 6 on Saturday night? I I heard it was a great concert and I am a huge Steven Curtis Chapman fan, so I'm sorry we didn't make it.

On hot days you can keep your working pot on ice while you are spreading it. Keeps the epoxy from building up heat and kicking. Also use large flat pans not little cups.Larry
