Finished my Barrister cabinet mod.

Postby BillZ » Mon May 28, 2012 6:11 pm

After about 6 weeks of a day here and a few hours there, I finally completed barrister cabinet doors in my galley. 90% of the planning came from my head so that explains the unorthodox design.

This is how it was before I started:

As with the drawers that I built last summer, I wanted to keep a simple look and use wood slides. It was important to me to penetrate the existing camper as little as possible, In case I didn't like the cabinets or for easy future repair/modifications.

The fronts are at an angle to maximize space. I cut the dividers to come as far out at the bottom as possible then found the angle was about 11 degrees. That let me know what to cut everything else after that. The angle also worked well with the barrister style because it allowed the doors to hug the top at 1/8" gap and still have enough clearance when opening the door.

I made the cabinets so that the side pieces are held in by the taillight bolts and the center dividers have small tabs that guide them into place. After removing the side bolts, the whole thing can slide out and come apart into pieces. The only new holes I made in the Tear were the 1/2" screws that hold in the guide tabs.

Lastly, I trimmed the original crates to fit inside. They act as shelves that can be pulled out if you need to really rummage through them.

Looks fantastic...and very practical too. :applause:  :applause:

Did you use dowels in the doors to run in the guides you routed?

Beautiful!! That's a classy looking galley you've got there, and a great job on the construction.

Thanks for the kind comments everyone. I wanted to post this mod mainly because I had trouble finding where anyone else had done that style door. My wife thought of suggesting Barrister doors when I was telling her how I was stumped over how to design the cabinets. I think having the doors out of the way when they are open will prove to be a plus.

Yes, I used 3/8" hardwood dowels and thankfully, they were a reasonably tight fit in the holes. Contact cement was used to keep them in and to allow for easy replacement in case one breaks. I am curious to see how well they hold up.

Very nice looking! Have always liked the clean lines of the Barrister style, just never thought about it in a Tear. What a great way to keep from being hit in the shins! :applause:

Very nice. I think that I am going to "borrow" your idea of the removable units, they look like they solve a lot of storage and access problems.
