We're about to pick up our commercially made trailer....what about insurance?

Any good rates or bad stories to tell?

Trailer insurance is dirt cheap. Your TV liability covers the trailer, so you pay for theft and damage only. We have ours through State Farm. They repaired a broken window a few years ago. No problem.

I've got state farm for my TV, I left a message with my agent, so I'm waiting to hear from him.

I was more curious how good Sam, other agencies I've never even heard of might compare. State farm is really good about some things, but kind of shaky on others....they were not particularly good at commercial insurance.

I know liability is covered by TV, I've been through that with a commercial trailer I used to tow.

Nationwide just paid out $9,000 repairing Compass Rose and today we head out on Maiden Voyage II to check out that everything is playing well together. Cost of insurance $189 a year.

I think Shadow Catcher might disagree.

Gerry, I'm on the south side and I've had good luck with my State Farm agent. Hollar if you want her name and number.

I have state farm too, and when I called to see what insurance I might be able to get, they said they didn't have anything that would work for me, I think I need to call back. I did, however add RV to my AAA membership. 69.00 a year, but they will tow the rig if I get left on the side of the road. otherwise you lock it up, hope for the best and leave it.

Good suggestion.

Though it may not apply here, since my trailer is homebuilt as opposed to commercially built, I have State Farm agreed value/full coverage.
I'm paying a lot compared to most, $235 a year, but the trailer is insured for $17,000

Called State Farm again yesterday and got a different person. This one told me that she LOVED teardrops (always an in) and that I would need to send them pictures, it would go out for review. I am asking for a stated value of 6K, so we will see what they come back with for a rate. $>

Remember that the stated value is just that, what you "state" it to be, and what they will use to determine the rate you will pay.

It does not mean that they will pay you the $6K if it is totaled...

An agreed value policy backed by an appraisal is much better.
Since you have a commercially manufactured trailer, it will be easier for them to determine what similar, if not exact trailers are selling for, but again, just because you "state" that it is worth/you want to insure it for 6K, doesn't mean they will pay that amount.

Depreciation, etc. will play a big part in the adjusted determining what they will pay.

If you want to be paid $6K in the event of a total loss, then you really need an agreed policy, when you have one, assuming your appraisal comes in at or above 6K then you will get the total amount.

Thanks good to know. My rig was homebuilt (though not by me), so that will introduce some wrinkles I am sure. :DOH2:

I'm sure that every state may be different. However, in Calif, whether or not your trailer can get insurance may depend on how it is described on the title, at least with my agent. IE...a trailer that has a frame registered as "utility" may not qualify for RV type insurance. I register/title mine as "special construction" since I'm building the frames have no VIN and the state is creating the title. They have to be complete to get registered like this however.

Also...check to see if carrying propane or having propane appliances fixed in the trailer will effect your insurance or void it. State Farm has asked me every time if I'm carrying fuel on it or have gas appliances. I've insured 5 builds with State Farm and had no problems getting coverage. 135$ a year on the Nomad...10K insurance (I think). They didn't inspect it...I just gave them some pics of it. Doug
