Device that does function of Dometic StartSmart

Postby terryjones1 » Sat Jun 09, 2012 3:45 pm

The Dometic StartSmart is an electrical device that smothes out startup power demand on an Air Conditioner instead of spiking it.
This would alow you to use a much smaller generator.
I looked at specs for the Dometic StartSmart.

It works on Air Conditioneres that are 5000 btu's & up.

Does anyone know of a similar device that would do the same thing?

Do a search for hard start capacitor. Check out http://www.supco.com/images/pdfs/AC%20H ... ooklet.pdf which gives a good description of how they work.

the SmartStart is actually a 120v variable speed drive running as a soft starter. It starts an AC with no power spike. It's expensive though. Not at all similar to a hard start capacitor. You can pick one up for $380-450.
