Programs for children at campgrounds

Here is a hint if taking children camping, check early on in your stay if the campground offers any special programs for children. I took my 2 neices and nephew to the Black Hills of South Dakota, on our last full day, I found out the the state campground offers a Junior Naturalist program in which they can earn a certificate, seal and patch for certain activities. The girls were able to earn all three and the nephew will finish out and earn his seal on the next trip. The kids really enjoyed it(and hopefully learned in the process)and it was FREE.

Most of the National monuments and parks have a Junior Ranger program. If your not pressed for time seeing the sights, it is well worth the time to let the kids participate. It is a great way for them to learn some history without them realizing they are learning.

Campland on the Bay in San Diego caters to kids. Great place to camp. we usually go on week days because weekends are crazy full of kids.

And if the adults aren't careful they may learn something new. As an adult I find the movies that the state campgrounds present entertaining, and they are short enough that the kids don't get completely bored. The night they showed a Mutual of Omaha with Marlin Perkins show really took me back to my youth.

My granddaughter really liked the reptile showing at Catalina state park north of Tucson last year where she held a snake for the first time ever. She like the star gazing also until the grown ups started pushing to get looks in the telescopes.

You are not supposed to have programs for kids, there supposed to run wild and discover the world (nature ) by themselves... Campground programs are a adult invention with the concept kids have to be entertained and controlled (babysit) , how can they grow if they are caged.... Beside if they don't explore and discover on their own the are just another "programed" entity... Any program hinders the discovery experience and maybe even the possibility of being eaten by a bear...

we grew up much as Dale stated but that was back in the first half of last century they say it takes a village to raise a child
in the small village I grew up in every child had 20 or 30 parents if you acted up they corrected you
and you knew you would get it when you got home too because they had called your parents

now back to the organized programs for children and adults I always take the guided tour when staying in Sebring Florida state park
they take you off the beaten path and tell you about whats in the park things I would look at and think it's just a tree not that it's a 1000 year old tree.
or was it a 200 year old tree? darn now I'll have to take the tour again.

We hiked down to the bottom, and then back up, of course, of the Grand Canyon because I'd turned 50 a couple weeks before.
I didn't see any kids down there. So, I took "the test" and got a Junior Ranger Badge and a Phantom Ranch Rattler sew on badge.
The rangers asked me not to publicize this happening, so shhhhhhhhhh.

But yes, they have such a program there. I think your kid can become a junior ranger on the rim of the canyon too. But I think the Phantom Ranch Rattler Sew On Badge must be gotten at the bottom of the canyon.

There was also an area for talks to be given, but we were there in the winter and on a weekday.

Hmmm, wonder if that is available on DVD, I love watching old movies or tv series while camping.
