Back Home Again in Indiana!

Postby indycamper » Wed Jun 13, 2012 10:37 pm

HISTORY: Childhood vacations were spent on the road, tent camping - the only way we could afford to travel! As I got older we graduated to motels. Once I married, had kids, and then found myself as a single mom, it was back to tent camping! This was followed by brief spells with a travel trailer (NOT a teardrop, though) and then a camper shell on the pickup. By the time the kids were in high school, life got in the way and camping became a thing of the past. Until two years ago, when I retired and decided it was high time I got back to doing what I really liked, so renewed my camping equipment and set out for the parks - both State and Disney! :D

AMAZING DISCOVERY: The ground is a lot harder when you have arthritis, even if you do have an air mattress. And a small, 4-foot-high tent in which the air mattress takes up 90% of the floor space is not a good place to try to read during a rain storm! And besides that, the darn squirrels ripped out the window, broke into the tent, and made off with the s'mores fixings!

THE PROBLEM: How to continue to camp without 1) needing a winch to get up off the ground, 2) falling off the mattress while trying to sit and read, 3) mounting an armed guard against marauding squirrels, or 4) having the kids and grandkids constantly worrying about whether I would survive all alone out there without a lock between me and whomever/whatever might decide to do me in!

THE SOLUTION: You have probably figured this part of the story out - a TEARDROP, of course! :applause: :applause: :applause: I discovered them while watching "Extreme RVs" on Travel Channel and seeing an 80-year-old woman who was having a ball with hers. FIguring that if an 80-year-old could do it, this not-yet-70-year-old could also, I began looking for one that would be big enough to hold me, my gear, AND my mobility scooter (needed when I have more than a short distance to walk). I found one that would definitely do the job - a LIttle Guy Sport, complete with a large box for my gear and a "front porch" where I could secure the scooter when traveling. My daughters conferred and announced that I had "finally had a good idea!" After several phone calls a price was agreed upon and my younger daughter and I headed from Indianapolis to Nashville (TN, not IN) to check it out and bring it home if I still liked it. :worship: I liked it just fine!!

GERTRUDE COMES HOME: It appears that my trailer was "Made in Indiana", so it seemed fitting that it should come back to Indiana and take up residence in my driveway. (Hence the "Back Home" title to the intro!) The first time I took it out, it "galloped" along behind me. The galloping provided a nickname - "Galloping Gertie" - because I was certain it would cause me to wreck! Seems that it was a tad too tongue heavy and was pulling down on the back of the tow vehicle! Once I got home I adjusted the weight and the hitch and have had no problems since. And the name seemed ALMOST right. Expanded to "Gertrude", it fit the trailer just fine. So "Gertrude" it is.

PROBLEMS SOLVED: Gertrude has taken care of all my camping problems. Most important, from the family's standpoint, are the door locks! I can get out of bed without a major production. There is plenty of space inside, complete with reading lights and comfy bolster pillows, so that I can read without fear of falling off the mattress! And, most importantly, Gertrude is squirrel-proof! :applause:  :applause:  :applause:

Hope to see you out and about!
Sharon

I really need to re-retire one of these days.

Great intro!

I was born and raised in Indiana and still consider myself a Hoosier. Great place to live!

I am sure you will enjoy the heck out of your new tear. Post pics if you can.

Back Home Again in Indiana!

Indycamper, I sure hope to meet you at a campground!!! Gertrude and Escaped2 sound similar. I, too, got tired of tents, tired of cots (got tired of air mattresses a long time ago!!!), but I've never been bothered by squirrels, although I have a story about thousands of ants (did I mention I hate ants???).

So , hopefully we'll meet and share some "women camping alone" stories.

I plan on being at the Summer Gathering, so perhaps we can meet up then.

Have done some minor remodeling, and am trying to get the pix into a "Build" thread - "Gertrude Gets a Galley" :pictures: Have had a blast and am fairly satisfied with the results, but am also 100% certain that it would have been easier to build from scratch rather than try to get into some of the cramped quarters needed to remodel!

Welcome.
We camped with a pop-up for four years and had modified it to our liking and then sold it.
We've really enjoyed getting together with others from this group and The Tear Jerkers. Fun to see what everyone's done to make it just right for them.
Glad you're enjoying.
