It's nice that you asked how to pack a stove....I've gotten them just thrown into a box so it got extra beat up on the way here, not even a wad of newspaper. It was a beater to begin with...so hard to say if it got any more damage on the way here. Doug

I figured even a $5 stove deserves some respect ;)

I just got back from three days of glorious camping on the California coast and I learned a few things. Cast iron frying pans are heavy and they do not work good for anything. Now before you start blasting me about the glory of cast iron let me say I have owned that pan for 20 yrs. Fry potatoes or eggs in it and they ALWAYS stick. I gave to the guy camping next me. I am going to buy the most expensive teflon pan money can buy! Cast iron camp dutch oven yes, cast iron frying pan for camping NO!

And another thing. White gas stoves rule! I did alot of cooking side by side with my brother in law, he had the PROFANE and I have my trusty 425B that I redid and painted black. One tank of Coleman fuel lasted through TWO of the propane canisters. The wind kept blowing out his stove and he eventually move over to cooking on a real stove. My stove was hotter, better and a lot cheaper to run.

So what do you think?

I would never use teflon pans.
I don't know what went wrong with your cast iron. But ; They are all I use and almost never have a sticking problem. The mistake most people make is to clean cast iron too much and wash off the seasoning.

That's just my opinion.

Yes; it's bad in the summer.
I drove through Colusa this weekend on my way to the Nevada City Soap Box Derby. I almost emailed you about those AGM lanterns you said you had. Good thing I didn't. You were gone. lol

Yes; I just watched the race. Doug and I thought it might be fun to build a car. I just went to check it out.

I know what you mean about getting sucked into another hobby. That was what I keep telling myself as I plan a car in my head. :NC

Houston, we have a problem

Image

:fb:

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Was cleaning up a 220E and found this little tiny hole. Picked at it a bit. Oh well, every one needs some parts. That lantern Had really been abused. Inside the font was what looked like some burned foil backed paper, like some candy wrappers or cigarette pack. I did the BB shake and all, several times. Blew a mess of black crap out of it. Looked like I was going all Amos and Andy on you people. The packing nut of the valve stem had been tightened down so much I really had to work at it to get it out. When out the valve packing had broken. The valve wheel was gone as it had probably been broken trying to turn it and then pliers had been used on the wheel spline. I had to use more pliers to get it out. By then the shaft was pretty ruined. At least the burner cage is pretty straight and not to rusty. Vent has some chips on it, nothing great. Pump on it has the neoprene cup that did not work.

I have a little welding tip on my oxy/acetylene rig. might try to braze the holes closed. I have poked around and it does seem to have mostly good metal.

:D

Randy, I repaired a hole on a tank with some success, but I took some heat. It seems the popular opinion is that it is not worth it and not safe to fix them. The tanks are cheap enough to replace. I think maybe I tend to agree with that viewpoint a little more now. It is fun to try to recycle and repair but be safe.
Good luck whatever you do.

I agree with you Keith, But then where is the fun in that?

Don't worry, if I do it I will put kerosene in it and pump it up really good and let it set for some time to see what happens.

The problem with trying to braze the hole is that you have to get it hot enough for the brass to stick. This in turn melts all of the solder holding the bottom, pump, and top bung in.
It's my opinion to find another fount.

First attempt left a pin hole in the bronze. Going to grind most of that off and do it again.

Yes, I was also worried about the solder melting out. That was not a problem. For now.

Had to give it a try as I have a font to play with. If I can't make it work to my satisfaction about the only thing left is to cut it up to show people what they look like inside.

Well I finally got all the holes plugged along the bottom. Trouble with welding down there is you have to keep most of the heat on the very bottom where there is a lot of metal and occasionally flick the flame up on the side but I got them done.

Then I found a hole way up the side.

Any one have an extra font?
