This cozy little cruiser Features:
1) 20 + feet from Tounge to Bumper
2) 13 feet Inside space plus almost 4 feet of galley
3) The two rear sections, ( I call them Pantries ) will eventually, " Open up and swing forward "
4) It has an 80" wide master bed ( converts to a six person table), and two 42 " bunk beds
5) It is design to have a front to back, " Bronzed Lexan Moon Roof " When the Galley Hatch is done you will be able to see the stainless pull out ( double sink and cook top )
6) I will build my own custom fridge:
a) which will be an upper cabinet side by side door configuration
b) aproximately 54" WIDE, + or - 35 " HIGH and + or - 30" DEEP

Thanks for viewing our ideas and inspiring their creation

Pretty cool. We need more pictures though. Earlier build pictures if you have them.

Here are a few Dan:

Having difficulty with these albums.

But heres a couple:

93947
93948
93950

I will try to show more of the newer work and show detail as it develops. After installing the 1/2 " baltic birch plywood spars , I put in the interior Longnatudinal mahogany strips, ( 1/4thick x 1' wide ) . . . These I eased to edges. On the compound curves Each Section between spars had to be individually cut PL 400 glued and micro pinned in place.

Once I grasped how to deal with the compound curves and kurf cutting the 2 1/2 inch thick ceiling insulation.
Everything about this build detail is time consuming. To give you an example it took one long week to insulate the ceiling. Another long week to clad the exterior 1/8" plywood skin pieces. I have done all the work alone.

I have made changes as I go and I try not to let anything get me down. There are no serious errors that couldn't be easily fixed but I just kept pluggin on through it all and addressed issues as they come up.

Reconcileing compound curves can be tricky and because I am rounding the under belly as well it makes it even more fun because at both ends above and below the frame I am dealing with 4 different radi coming together all from different directions. :?

Once I get the underbelly in I will show pictures to better understand.

Cheers ,
Martin

Hi Dan: Here are a couple shots. Having FUNN getting these pictures into play. I will show more work as I go to make up for what may raise questions or a lack of detail. I am not good with cad and draft the old fassion way on velums. For this I used Andrews Campmaster 14 to start. . . and had the profiles cut out on a CNC Router. As I have progress I simply sawed off the ass end and extended it 17" longer. To achieve a comfortable 6" 11" interior hieght I used 14" radius spar inside which is 17" radius outside as they are 3" high. In addtition there is a 6" rise into the 34" wide Trolly coffered area. Hi Becky:

I just googled reading and gobbling everything I could from what others were doing.
I came across a Youtube video demonstrating a square box trailer and a Comparable Airstream trailer in a comparison test through a Pylon course at a test facitlity.

By the time the square box trailer had gone through the 3rd Pylon it was up on one wheel and almost rolled right over.

As a kid I played around with RC airplanes and thought a lot about areo dynamics. . . from a lay mans point of view.

Other than that I like you folks love wood working and now I can and am perfecting my welding . . . still lots of practice yet on that part but I am getting better. I had an experience welder help me and he did much of the welding and I cut the pieces.

Cheers
Martin :)

Hi all good folk in TD Land:

Another picture and some explanation:

For the side walls cores I used 1" thick plywood. At first I used 1 1/2 " thick fir blocks cut and rabbitted out slots to conect the 1/2" roof sparsto the plywood wall cores. Each block was predrilled on the drill press and has 4 into the side wall. To attach the 1/2" notched spar I predrilled two holes and used 2 1/2 " bolts with Nilex nuts / washers I wanted to hold the spars tight and in perpendicular angles off the ever changing radius.

My walls are 3" thick consisting of:
1) .040 stainless steel mirror finish . . . got 6 sheets at a scrape yard for $250.00. . . I can live will some scratches
( normaly 350 each)
2) 1/8" exterior skin
3) 1" plywood core CNC routed
4) 1 1/2 fir stips and pieces at the base above the sub floor, around the windows and doors. I needed no studs anywhere else because at every spar there is a 1 1/2" bock
5) 3/8" baltic birch

So I have an R-15 value in the walls and ceiling at 2 1/2 " thickness.

Hi again:

Here is how the changes from what I started on evolved. To start with I spart the roof front to back, then cut the interior and put in the interior Longatudinal mahogany strips. As nice as it felt being inside that space I wanted more. The width of the trailer is 84" otu to out.

After reading Zac's build I decided on a Trolly top . . . I simply made up some 3/4" trolley spars and then put them in from the top. I glued and bolted them in and in most places I doubled them up for strength as there are alost 6 feet apart.

Cheers,

Martin

Re: The Round About

Postby Martinup » Fri Jun 22, 2012 8:28 am

Hi yet again:

I thought you guys might be interested in how I came up with the curved back end. This was relatively easy given that they are a perfect circle and this made it much easier than you might think.

When I first got started with this curved top I admit I was somewhat perplexed on how to go about it . . . Ok even a bit overwhelmed. For any of you wanting to take on these 3 dimensional shapes I will share a secret. Don't try and tackle all three Axis at once. If your like me you have to turn the map in the direction I am going as I am not able to invert or read it upside down so to speak.

So again stay in one axis at a time start with the vertical side wall. Decide on a shape you like and then work on that. In my case I really liked the from curvature of the Nose of my trailer. . . It has a 29" radius. At the back of my trailer I had 51" in Height. So that meant a 25 1/2 " Radius. Now simply add the outside radius of the roof spar witch is 17 " and you come up with a 42 1/2" outer circle. To keep things simple I kept roof flat. If you really have some fun and BOGGLE your brain you could do an elliptical shaped roof.

So I then made up 2 templates in the shape of a capital letter, " D ", one with a radius of 25 1/2" and another with a 42 1/2" radius. From these carefully sanded templates I made my shapes At the bottom end of these, " D's ", I found the intersection of the arch which is 7" up. I did this because when going over a sharp incline with your trailer can bottom out.

I had a many pieces of my 1/2" plywood roof spar material made up on a CNC machine. To save on material costs I used 5' x 5' x 1/2" Baltic Birch as it has very few voids in the core. You have to double layer these around 12 " over the seam, . . . glue and screw them together, ( PL 400) . . . to make up one complete spar piece otherwise you will go through insanely large amounts of plywood. I used a jig to keep them all the same just some perimeter strips screw to a large area to make the out to out dimensions . . . basically a 3 sided rectangle.

Anyway I got off track there for a moment . . . back to the rear pantry shapes. The roof spars pieces looked like field hockey sticks. . . . Like a capital letter , " L " , with a rounded corner. From the outside vertical wall my 17" arch travels in perpendicular approximately 21" . . . Hence giving me my pantry depth. After interior Vinyl Fabric is put in my shelves will be 18" deep . . . Plenty of room for storage of everything one should need while camping.

Pardon the long post but I hope this gives you a good perspective on three dimensional shapes. While I was pondering this stuff I went into the sixth dimension to find the answers. It never ceases to amaze me how or brains process information and come up with solutions. I know none of this is rocket science but it is somewhat involved to make.

Cheers

Martin ;)

Hi Martinup,

I love originality, and your build has that in spades!

I recall some earlier posts you had on it, but I can't find
the thread with them anywhere. If you can locate it, why
not post the link to it in this thread so there'd be continuity.

It will be very interesting to follow along on your remaining build
progress.

If you want to include any of your manual drawings, one way to
be able to do that is to scan them into your computer using your
scanner/printer program for doing so and save it as a jpeg file
in your Pictures folder. You can then put it/them in your album on the forum
by clicking on 'Gallery' in the header, and then click on your personal
album, and then click on the "add image" under your user name, and
that'll bring up the screen for uploading images. Clicking on the
"Choose File" brings up your "Pictures" folder on your computer and you
can then select the name of the file(s) for your scanned in jpeg image(s)
of your manual drawing(s). Repeat as needed/wanted.

Good luck on the remaining build work. The extra time it takes will
reward you with a rolling work of art to use for your travels.

Cheers,
Norm/mezmo
