Four foot is cozy,,,, but if I was building for two.....I'd build five wide. I am average size,,(by my standards) but I tend to flop around at night like a flounder in a shallow live well so the more room the better....just my humble opinion...

Yes, 4' is too narrow for most people. A lot of people that build a 4' wide build a second wider one.

I built mine on a HF trailer, but expanded it to 5' with a little welding. It wasn't that hard and am very glad I went 5' wide. A four footer would not be as comfortable.

Mine is 40" wide inside and plenty of room for me and my Border Collie. Though between the two of us we dont break 200 pounds! I doubt anyone else would attempt fitting in there with me, but I can list a few advantages of the traditional 4 wide...
-very easy to see around and operate while driving
-4x8 is such a common size for materials that it makes the build less complicated and less expensive
-people are even more surprised when you tell them you can fit everything in there!! :)
Those people that constantly need a pat on the back to feel proud of thier accomplishments typically don't go very far...

Couple of things to consider. Wife & I can sleep very comfortably on the 48" wide bed in our Scamp fiberglass trailer. No claustrophobia because the bed isn't surrounded by walls on all 4 sides. Our TD is 5' wide (outside dimension) & the mattress is about 57". Even tho the bed is much larger (comparatively) in the TD, it can sometimes feel a little cramped mainly due to the 4 walls & the lower ceiling in the TD. I've never felt uncomfortable in the TD but sometimes when there's other 'stuff' in the cabin it doesn't feel as 'roomy' as other times. I might think about building a 4' wide for weekend hunting/fishing but it'd be for me only. After 52 years together we're pretty used to each other but, don't think we'd be comfortable 'sleeping double' in a 4' wide enclosed space... :frightened:

We have a 4' trailer and it's wonderful for one person and for being light weight to pull behind the bug.
However, it is lousy for sleeping two in, at least us two. (My hubby and I) I think that one has to think about the size of the bed and being "locked in" to that area. No where to throw your knee over/stretch out a bit. You come up against a wall.

Wish we had went 5 feet. We would be using ours more than what we do. However, for a quick weekend, it's doable. A longer trip? No WAY!
