build setback....

Postby mike_c » Fri Jun 22, 2012 6:24 pm

It appears that there really isn't any place locally to buy aluminum, Filon, or any other durable outer skin material in the sizes I need. This is in Humboldt County, California, on the North Coast. A local metals dealer will include an order for 5 x 10 sheets of either 0.032 or 0.040 aluminum in their next inventory order for me-- EVERYONE else I've talked to has to special order and will tack on a $200 crating and shipping fee-- but that means mill finish aluminum, not my first choice but I can live with it, and a three week + wait. The earliest they can get it is the end of the second week in July! The best price I've gotten for finished white aluminum is $6 a sq. ft in five ft widths, so close to $1000 plus the crating/shipping fee. I'm still waiting for a quote from the metals dealer, but earlier they told me to expect to pay about half that, just under $3 a sq ft for mill finish 0.032.

There is hardly any weight penalty for using the the thicker 0.040 material and even though it's only eight thousandths of an inch thicker, it is much easier to handle without dinging or creasing, so I'll probably use it if the price isn't prohibitive.

The worst part is that I'm just about ready to begin skinning my teardrop-- I could start early next week if I had the materials. Now I have to put the build on hold for at least a couple of weeks! I suppose the alternative is renting a truck (my pickup won't handle sheets that size) and driving to San Francisco, Sacramento, or Portland (where the metals dealer will buy the aluminum)-- all six or more hours distant.

If anyone in the Eureka CA area knows of anyone who has either a five foot roll of aluminum or 5 x 10 sheets, or any other similarly durable skin material, I'd really appreciate hearing about it. I've talked with Century Service (trailer repair), Wright's RV, the RV place out on the 101 at Indianola, and a couple of sign shops (Eureka Neon?). Nada. The metals dealer that will order for me is Eureka Boiler in Arcata.

I figured all they'd carry is galvanized sheet metal-- do they use aluminum, too? I'll call some next week!

Mike:

 Have you called or PM'd Grant Whipp (Lil' Bear) ? He isn't all that far away (Redding). If there is a source locally, I'd bet he'd know about it. I know there are some plywood suppliers here in Redding that come over the mountains to deliver plywood to Eureka/Arcata. There may be a metal supplier too. It doesn't hurt to ask.

Call around to the semi trailer shops down in Sacramento. It's gonna be a days trip to come and get it, but they have mill finish or painted on a coil. I think it was Fruehauf that I got it from in the past. Beats the shipping on it, and they will coil it for you so you don't need a rack on your truck..can just slide it in the bed. I haven't bought it from Sac in a while, but it was a decent deal at the time, I could be wrong, but I'm thinking 13$ a running foot for 103". Doug

Don't you have any race shops in the area that fabricate car bodies? Give them a try. Scroungers' can be your friends.

Mike.
I was in the same position as you were a few weeks ago so I checked with my local welding supply shop and they ordered in two 4 x 10 sheets of .040. It was $125 per sheet. I think B&B in Ukiah could do the same or anyone who supply metal for welders or fabracators. The 5 wide stuff was a bit harder to find. I got it from Grant of Lil Bear in Redding for just a bit more. I hope this helps.
