Tear without a regular galley countertop?

Postby Kharn » Mon Jun 25, 2012 8:33 am

So after checking out yet another Tearjerker camp-out and spending ~2 hours at the Little Guy/T@B dealer, my girlfriend and I were discussing what we'd want in a tear. One of the things we were thinking about was not having a conventional galley countertop, just a pull/fold-out segment inside and table rails on the exterior. Has anyone done anything similar?

Mainly we're thinking about a shortened Weekender, chopping it vertically at the rear of the frame so the hatch is much less complicated, like zapj did with his(his album), but we would have a shallower angle on the rear (so the vertical part of the hatch is much taller):

The taller vertical would give us more storage space for cabinets/drawers, but we'd lose a significant amount of potential storage space if we put in a conventional counter top at a usable height. So, I thought maybe make one of the cabinets like bbarry did in his, with a slide-out/fold out cabinet/counter:

My one concern will be balancing the hatch length & angle so we can walk under it without banging our heads. The negative tongue weight from the increased cabinets/hoarding of kitchen gadgets will be balanced out by the battery box and air conditioner at the front of the tear.

Any ideas/suggestions?

I am planing something simular. I still am trying to decide how the table will fold out. It will be hinged at floor and fold out to be a low table. I have the advangate in that my trailer sits higher then most for off-raod use.

There will be a small shelf to help with food preperation in the galley itself. It is where the board is in this picutre. The main table will fold out on the left side where the green item is in this pic. this area has a window AC unit and will have no usable storage below the shelf.

I chopped the rear as well. The hatch on mine is just as complex as the weekender.

I'm thinking the galley could be made to pull out from either side and dispense with the hatch altogether. If you build the galley high enough you'd have the whole length of the cab for sleeping and/or storage at your feet.Good for tall folks.'Course, half the cool factor of a teardrop is the hatch..

Check out Paul Arnold's Epiphany build. He is doing his galley just the way you suggest.
