When I replaced the putty tape on the side moulding on my vintage trailer to butal tape I used a putty knife to scrape the larger chunks of dried putty from the side moulding, then I used a utility knife to get tough stuck on residu off and finally some sand paper and steel wool to get the last of the grime. Scratches did not matter as this was the inside of the moulding that would not be seen when I replaced it. I also used slightly larger screws than the original as some of the holes were stripped out. Squeezed some gorilla glue in some of the holes first too. A plastic putty knife will not scratch as much.
